V6 3.7 questions

I have a 2006 XK, 4.7 4WD. 224,000 miles and had plenty of little issues over that time but I love her. I recently spotted a Ď10 Sport with Limited features that Iíve really been tempted to try but itís a 3.7 V6. I really prefer the V8 because I have a 2Ē lift (purchased from a member here) and at least 255/70 A/Tís.

Iíve seen a couple threads with V6 info but Iíd really appreciate some thoughts on this. Iím a little spooked on the V6 but need to know if anyone has similar mods with a V6, if it has enough power with bigger tires, gas mileage, etc. Especially if any of you have been around both 3.7 and 4.7. Iíve ďheardĒ ppl say there have been complaints about 3.7 and 5.7 but 4.7 are tougher. Iíve enjoyed my 4.7 and just like having the power but open to 3.7 if they last.

Please share thoughts. Havenít been on here in a while but you guys are great and have always been a huge help.

I can't offer first-hand experience with the 3.7 in the XK but I did have a 3.7 in my Liberty and actually swapped the engine out for a new one when the original developed a severe con rod knock. I put heavy armor, ARB bumper, winch and custom roof rack on the Liberty and it was a little piggy. Got around 18mpg on the highway but of course it is a rolling brick without much aerodynamic efficiency

The 3.7 is a tough engine and will do fine when taken care of. It is literally the little brother to the 4.7 engine; Chrysler lopped off two cylinders from the V8 4.7 to make the V6 3.7 so if you're familiar with the workings of the 4.7 V8 you'll recognize the 3.7's components right away. The 3.7 will be just as tough as the 4.7 when properly taken care of - it likes regular maintenance for sure. On the other hand the 5.7 Hemi is a completely different design with no relationship to the 3.7/4.7 family.

The 3.7 I had in my Liberty was fine for that vehicle - though when I went with larger tires I had to regear the differentials to get the power back. I can't imagine the 3.7 powering a Commander sufficiently with larger than stock tires without regearing the XK to compensate for the larger circumference. I believe the XK uses the 5 speed automatic tranny with the 3.7 which helps, but I've always thought the 3.7 was a bit too underpowered for the Commander. For comparison the 3.7 produces 210 horsepower where the Hemi puts out over 350 - and the fuel mileage isn't much different between the two.

In my opinion, if you had a 4.7 Commander before I think you'd be disappointed in the performance of the 3.7 in the same vehicle.

Thanks Bob! This definitely helps. May still check this 3.7 out to see for myself. Iím not dying to buy another one but this Ď10 has everything I want. Itís a sport, which I prefer for looks but it has most of the Limited features. That along with 80k miles and Iím very tempted. I bought my 06 with 120k miles and Iíve put 105k in 6-7 years. I feel like this one could last me nearly 10 years or more. Iíll just have to play it by ear but everything online seems to be a 3.7 engine.

The 3.7 has plenty of power and I have 32" tires on mine. There's this crazy idea that everything has to have a hemi in it. If you want a race car, buty one. If you want a jeep, buy one. You can't have both in a Jeep.

Keep in mind your 4.7 has only 20 more hp than the 2010 3.7 so if it bothers you that much you can buy a programmer which will get you 25 more hp on regular fuel. The 4.7 didn't get an increase in power until 2008.

If you want comfort, get the 2010. I love mine and I'd be annoyed at the cost of fuel owning a hemi.

We have a 3.7 2006 4x4 XK it has got more than enough power on the highway and on hills. That Mercedes NAG1 transmission is very smooth shifting.
I like it a lot, very smooth engine and comfortable ride. Only thing I hear is more people complain about the 3.7 XK power after 2006 where jeep switches throttle body to drive by wire where it is all electronic. The old cable throttle body might just be more responsive.
Iíd say the test drive will tell you all you need to know. Either it will compare favorably to the 4.7 XK or it wonít. But as I said I like our XK a lot and would buy another with a 3.7 or possibly 4.7 engine.

How many miles?

For ~$12k, can get this 2008 4.7 Limited:

https://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/d/...432809931.html

I'm tempted to look at it. Decent miles for a 10 year old car. Looks mint in the pics. I see a screen and a backup camera, need a better interior shot to verify. I'm sure it's the MyGig. I see a lot of guys buy a $20 adapter that plugs into the stereo port to stream their music via BT. The phone operation works over the like factory.

I was tempted to buy a 2010 Sport 5.7 but it didn't have auto head lights. That's a deal breaker to me. Go Limited for sure.

I paid 11,900 for a mint 2010 3.7 with 100k. That's a good price.

How many owners?

I think 1 owner but possibly two. Canít remem because Iíve seen a million on searches recently. Very clean. Only noticeable marks/scuffs were in the rear where the black net was torn and they must have moved some heavy items. Also, there was a place or two above the glove box where it looked smudged or melted, if that makes sense. Just two little places. Leather was pretty much perfect.

As of right now the wife doesnít want to go ahead so I may give it a little time.

I thought it was a pretty good deal, myself. They started at $13,900 and I told them Iíd consider doing business in the 12ís. I saw a 2010 Limited with 87k miles listed for $14,500 and told them I couldnít give nearly the same amount for a V-6.

For $12K, hold out for a 2009-2010 Limited 5.7 QD-II/HIDs. Don't settle less than 357HP!

I wouldn't get the V6.

Have you test drove a Volvo XC90 V8? I did for first time last week and they are a blast, even put an offer on one of them. Much more fun than the Jeep Commanders I've driven. Gotta get a 2008+ for better reliability, but still can be had for around $10K.
