Unusual Sunroof Leak?
Like many on here, I suffered from water coming in to the cabin through the trim panel on the front 'A' pillar. Of course I searched on here and saw that the most common problem was the sunroof drain tubes. Trim off, ends of both front tubes trimmed and cleaned and reassembled. pouring water in from a bottle and it was coming out quickly from the bottom of the tubes. The tubes also blew through easily. Job done I thought, but the water kept coming in. Primarily down the right hand side of the windscreen and onto the front right carpet. Searching again, possible alternatives seemed to be a screen surround or the bolt holes for the roof rails. It still looked like it was coming in from the area of the drain tube though....My problem is that I live in Scotland in the UK. The weather is 'variable', and is generally either cold and frozen, or milder and wet at this time of year (much the same in summer, but more daylight actually...). That being the case, and with no workshop I couldn't get the car dry and couldn't get it stripped out with any confidence that it wouldn't start pouring while I was at it. Eventually I gave in, got a cover and strapped it down with the windows open slightly to let it dry out. I got a booking with a local body shop who would look at leaks, and it went in yesterday, thankfully dry again. So, they called me to say the drain tubes were fine and they had sealed the bolt holes for the roof rails. With a water test, it was coming in past the sunroof seal at the rear of the glass, at a rate that was overwhelming the drain tray and tubes. They adjusted it but it kept leaking, so they have sealed it with a flexible butyl sealant as a semi permanent fix which I am inclined to just leave in place. So... has anyone experienced this and can the sunroof seal be purchased without the glass? It's a 2007 3.0 CRD Limited, only 40,000 miles! Oh, and the repair only cost me about £70GBP/$100USD. I can live without the sunroof opening if it's an expensive fix to buy and fit a replacement part...!
