Oil Change

I hit 1400 miles getting close to an oil change, wonder if anyone has started using synthetic on the 1st change, I run mobil 1 synthetic in my other jeeps with no problems.

Hey gblue- I was told that you can use a synthetic by my mechanic. However he said that you don't need too unless your engine is worth big bucks and you want the extra protection. My feeling is if you are changing your oil every 3000 miles it is not necessary to spend the extra money for synthetic.

I just think its worth the difference in price, plus my son works at autozone and I normally can get Mobil 1 for about $1 per quart If I were paying the normal 6$ per quart I might consider dino oil ...

I'm considering using Mobil 1 in my Commander but I think I'll follow conventional wisdom and use dino oil for the first 10,000 miles or so -- there's some thought that engines want to break in a little more before using synthetic oil. Some even say that an engine might not ever break in properly if synthetic oil is used too soon; it's too slippery!

I _never_ know if any of this is true. One thing I wouldn't do is assume I can go far longer with synthetic oil than I can with dino oil. I'll still try to keep to the normal oil-change intervals.

Yeah, I have heard that too about break in. I think I will wait a while to go to synthetic, and yes I still change mine ever 3 k even with synthetic ..

I use Mobil 1, I figure if break in was an issue Mopar, Mercedes, Porsche etc. wouldnt put it in from factory on high end vehicles.

Oils need to be clean - that is most important.
Dino-oil breaks down more quickly than a synthetic one (not by much if you have a good one).
It is really important if you have unusual stresses on your application, such as having a turbo (which is hot and gets too little cooling after you shut down the engine), or possibly if you are running the JEEP "hot", or near red-line. Otherwise, I would stick with what the manual suggests, just in case a warranty question comes up. You never want to give the "other party" a reason not to pay
I changed my oil (first oil change was free!) after 3000 miles, will do so again after 3000, but will go with the 6000 miles schedule thereafter. At that time, the engine will have shed most of the particles due to abrasion it needed to be broken in. That only clogs up the filter and is not so much a reason for the oil change itself. Thereafter, I think that 6k miles for a modern engine is still very conservative.

I have been using Amsoil in my vehicles including 2 current Harleys. Have had good luck with it. Amsoil says it's OK to change after 1,000 miles. But like you guys, it might be best to wait a change or 2. The synthetic oil doesn't break down like Dino's. Tha's why it can stay in the vehicle longer. The most important thing is changing the filter in between oil changes if you want to keep the oil in longer. This way you get rid of the particles that might develop. You can become a preferred customer and save a little on the purchase. The Amsoil in the Harley's takes a pretty good beating here in the San Antonio heat and it is still good between the 5,000 mile changes. I also gainned 4 MPG on the bikes. Haven't put it in the Commander HEMI yet though.
