Few Issues

Hi Guys

UK Commander owner here.
3.0 Diesel

Went for 100k service the other day and was told that the intercooler is leaking. Hopefully its just a seal or something cheap. The garage had to clean the gunk off so that they could be sure of there it was coming from.

I was told to drive around for a few days then go back.

In the meantime the check engine and ETC light have come on.

I did the key reset and it worked for a few miles - now they are on constantly.

I did some research and found the dreaded swirl actuator issue on youtube. It looks pretty oily under the air pipe so I am fearing the worst and am looking at a replacement for about 150 uk plus labour.

However, I also noticed that the fuel filter is leaking fuel. Obviously this is new from the service so they have not put it in correctly.

So my questions are:

Would the fuel leak cause the ETC to kick in?

If I need a new intercooler unit is there an aftermarket one I can use or one from another make/model of car? I have been on ebay etc and cant find one for a commander anywhere.

Last question - are Mercedes OM642 Red seals the right ones for the inlet pipes?

@stupops;

We have quite a few other UK Commander Owners on the forum who have the 3.0L CRD Diesel, hopefully they can chime in here and help you out.

Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about the 3.0L CRD's.

I am hoping they are all small fixes that seem bigger than they are.

UPDATE!

So - the leaking intercooler looks like a simple jubilee clip was loose on the hose going into it. Fixed that myself! (I hope)

The fuel filter wasn't on correct so the garage has done that FOC.

They cant see any leaking from the transmission - so that is a relief and new fluid filters going in on Wednesday.

The Engine Management light has gone out - for the moment.

The only real issue now seems to be the ETC. It looks like a problem with the swirl flap so we are gonna bypass it with one of these beauties!

I hate carelessness, especially by mechanics working on vehicles!!!! Glad they took care of their mistake FOC...but really, they should've done it right the first time.

I agree. Worse when you have paid for it - and probably lost lord knows hot much diesel.

Although they are a decent garage so I am assuming it was the new lad that did it! The guy who runs it found the Swirl Emulator - I am hoping that it sorts the problem permanently.

I will be honest - this place is a great resource. I am thinking that certain things I will do myself from now on. I worked out that by listening to the parking sensors clicking you know they work...I have one that isn't making any noise. I might just get a new sensor and replace and see how I get on.

I need to get a code reader next I guess. Although not sure if one of these reset any warning lights/messages on the dash display?

I have worked as a maintainer of various types of equipment and machinery over the years, and I'm here to tell you that this sort of thing just happens, nobody is perfect! Occasionally there are problems that turn up after service work is done, even with the best and most experienced technicians. They also work on a wide range of issues and systems in numerous different vehicles every single day, and time is money! Sometimes mistakes are made.

An honest repair shop that charges fairly and stands behind their work is a valuable thing, give them a chance to make it right!

I agree. Its frustrating -but its not the end of the world and they fixed it with no charge. They are a good bunch of lads. TBH - I think they are looking forward to working on the jeep as they see it as a challenge to sort all of the gremlins!

I get that mistakes are made...but really, a lot of times they happen because many places are worried about quantity of cars coming in and out rather than the quality of work they're doing.

Like I said, I'm glad they took care of it FOC...I haven't had that experience with many shops and dealers in the US.

So good on them!
