first road trip

changed my oil thursday noticed silver grease (similar to antiseize)on some tranny lines above the filter location, dealer had no idea what it was. said theyll clean it and come back if it reoccurs. went from tampa area to the panhandle. about 6 hrs w/stops. got around 16 mpg w/wife and two kids. on the way back about 2hrs into trip the service 4wd light flashed then went away. 2 more hrs went by and the light flashed again. the ride seemed fine with no noise or vibration. two more hrs home and no problems. before my next trip i will be getting a roof pod. was queiter at 80mph than i expected.

whats the deal with the serice 4wd light? is it a time/mileage warning or does it only come on when theres a problem?

any idea why theres silver grease on tranny lines than go into the cooler?

As far as the grease goes, I wonder if it is some sort of pipe dope used in an attempt to stop a leak. A big no no in a hydraulic line.

It could be part of the cause of the service light too.

Just a guess though.

Interesting... I haven't seen anything like that on my lines. And can not think why you would find it on your lines unless its actual antiseize that had been applied to a series of bolts that was applied more then generously and over time with heating and cooling of the area helped spread the grease over the lines. But you got me on that one. I would expect you would find tranny fluid on your lines if your 4x4 system was leaking.

On the service light, I had a simular issue and it was a reflash of the computer that fixed the issue on the 4.7 models. I would call your dealer and let them know to be on the safe side.

thanks for the TSB.

As for the lines. if you remove your oil filter and look just above where it should be there are two compression lines. where the metal fitting connects to the rubber hose there was grease. i thought it would be a build up of fluid. i touched it and noticed it was actually silver grease similar to anti seize. the lines go into the tranny cooler. 06 5.7 QD2
