Add AC refridgerant myself or take it to a shop?

Basically trying to fix as cheap as I can but also don't want to run the risk of messing anything up. I personally dont know how to add it but I know people who do and have done it before. Just don't know much about this stuff so not sure what risk if any I could run into justing buying a can and doing it that way, assuming a gauge and everything needed is being used.
