Rear bumper crunch = Insurance question

Okay, forgive me if this is a stupid question. I have never needed to make an insurance claim before (I'm only 24). My wife backed into something and crunched up the rear bumper on our Commander. Can I make an insurance claim for that? Obviously there was no one else involved, and it was definitely her fault, so will insurance pay?
My next question is, would it even be worth it to file a claim? I have a $500 deductible. I can install the bumper cover myself (based on the threads about installing the OEM trailer hitch). So can I get a bumper cover for under that? If I can't, then it may be worth it to just pay the deductible and have the stealership do it.

Thanks for the help guys!

There are a couple of things to consider...

Will your rate go up for a filed claim where you are at fault?

What is the difference between your deductible and the total repair cost?

If you replace it yourself can you also paint it to match? I don't think they come in different colors but I do not know on that issue.

If I file a claim, I'm sure my rate will go up. After thinking about it some more, I'm pretty sure I won't file a claim. Since I'd have to pay the $500 deductible, and I can't imagine the bumper cover being much more than that. So I bet my rates would go up enough (at least in the long run), to make better to do myself.

I have no idea about painting. If I can't find one in the right color online, I'd probably just order one from the dealership.

turning in a claim does not automatically cause your rates to increase.
Many companies advertise 1st claim free or accident forgiveness.

But......get an estimate anyway.

You have a 500 deductible. The bumber shouldnt cost that much. Check on colors, you may be able to get a bumper in your color. Try LKQ.com Good source. You don't want to waste your "forgiveness" on a small claim.

If you can take care of it yourself, on a small claim, do it.

Call the dealership and find out the price on a bumper. If it's under five or not much over five, do it yourself.

When one of my rear park sensors got pushed out the dealership told me I would have to replace the bumper cover at a cost of $700. YMMV.

Hey man, I'm a professional painter at a collision shop with 19 years experiance. The bumper covers DO NOT come pre-painted from chrysler. The only way you could get one already painted would be used, from a salvage yard, or on Ebay, or whatever. You wont have much luck there either. I have seen various bumper covers retail anywhere from $300 to $2000 depending on vehicle. I haven't checked, but I would be willing to bet it will be at least $500 just for the new cover. Then you have to get it painted, which will probably be another $250 to $300. Labor is not cheap, and materials are also pretty expensive. If you dont have a bad driving record, and haven't filed a claim before, your rates shouldn't go up, but you never know what an insurance company will do, as they are all a bunch of crooks, as far as I'm concerned. Look at it this way, you spent a lot of money for the Jeep to begin with. It's a pretty big investment, right. Why not go ahead and get the repair done properly by a professional shop? You will be much happier in the long run. I busted up two wheels and tires on my Commander and filed a claim with State Farm. My rate never changed, but I've been with State Farm since 1986 and had never filed a claim before.

I mentioned earlier LKQ.com is a good source for this stuff. Used parts, better prices.....

I saw a euro style rear bumper on ebay a couple weeks ago..they have the intgrated rear fog lights.

Oh, and with getlost selling rear bumpers, someone on the forum might want to part with thiers...

The deductible is not really an issue ... the real cost will be when your rates go up .. save it for a real acident ... my perosnal rule is if I can out of pocket $2000 then I do that rather than use insurance.

One time I craked up this guys car and BOUGHT it from him for $1200 rather do an insurance claim
