Front struts supposed to be this low?

I recently changed my lower ball joints and noticed the the strut sits pretty close to the bump stop. There's about 1-1.5 inches from the strut to bump stop. Is it supposed to be like this? or do i need new struts?

There is quite a bit of rust on the strut which leads me to believe they are the originals, i also have 137,000 miles on the commander. I have not noticed a difference in the ride probably cause i dive it everyday.

If i do need new struts i was leaning toward bilstein but i am open to other brands to. let me know what you guys think.

i can take more detailed pictures if requested.

I would get that checked. it sure looks awkward to me. Monroe makes good quality struts aswell.
