Rear Shock Question

First time poster, second time Commander owner. I know you veterans hate us new guys posting redundant questions so let me first apologize if I ask something that is easily covered already. I searched as best I could but haven't found an answer.

07 Commander Limited 5.7L 4X4

Purchased it 2 weeks ago with 100k miles exactly from a dealership. I put a RC 2" lift, 1.5" wheel spacers, and 265/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler M/T's. Love the look and stance sitting still. When I accelerate and drive the ass end sags terribly. I'm sure the shocks are shot. I have always owned sport trucks. (i.e. SS/T, SRT10, and a Lightning) This is my first off road toy so excuse my ignorance. I don't want to affect the stance but I really want it to stay pretty solid. Help me out experts. What shocks do I want?

Give you some history of how my last 2 weeks have gone. I was assured by the dealer that this vehicle had been thoroughly inspected and passed. Fuel gauge failure, transmission line, coolant leak, front diff bushings, two TPMS's, and a slipping transmission from first to second have all appeared magically in the two weeks and 500 miles of driving with no help from the dealership. Just ready to get this thing performing.

Shocks are not going to change the stance, unless they are some sort of special shock.

Judging from what you said, the Bilstein 5100 are what you want, they are little longer so they may give you some more wheel travel in the rear for off roading.

The rear shocks they make air shocks and some others that can add spring force to suspension to make it go up some. The front shocks, since they are coil spring over shock, the shock/strut has a spring perch. The 5100 has an adjustable spring perch that will let you raise the front the suspension varying amounts.

Keep the following in mind if you want to order matching fronts (you will once you realize how bad your old ones are, and how much the bilsteins change the ride) More so if you appreciate a more sport oriented response, like your other vehicles.


If you do order 5100 front Struts they will increase the front end height by .75" @ a minimum.

If you want your stance to stay the same you need to get bilstein 4600hd front struts. They are the same valving, and performance. The difference is cosmetic, increased length and the adjustable height spring perch only. You don't need any increased length shocks in the front due to your style of lift.

Well, and the fact the front is independent suspension, the wheel travel will be limited by the control arms NOT the length of the shock. While the rear, the longer shock will allow the rear axle to rebound farther.

Good point, he needs to know, I wasn't sure since I don't have them, but the adjustable spring perch on the Bilstein 5100 for the front of the Commander, at its lowest setting is still .75" higher than stock. Meaning .75" higher than your current lift in the front as well.

Great information guys. Thank you.

I'll do some digging for the part numbers in the morning. It sounds like the 4600hd/5100 combo is exactly what I am looking for.

The tires immediately dropped my fuel economy approximately 4 mpg. Pretty typical as well?

Update. New peope, use this forum as your Commander bible. My transmission slipping was a split transmission filter sucking air. Found it here. Clunking in the front end was the rack and pinion adjustment bolt. Found it here. Literally minutes of work and saved me thousands of dollars.
