Front Suspension Popping At Brake/Acceleration

I've done a ton on this and other Jeeps, including tearing out the dash for the dreaded blend doors, replacing a transmission shift solenoid, and more.

The problen I have now is that I've never kept a Jeep long enough to worry much about suspension, until now.

As the title states, I have a popping noise on the drivers side front end when braking or accelerating. I used to have a noise on the passenger side when making sharp turns, but I wasn't able to get to it and it went away...

I know almost nothing about suspensions, can anyone suggest what the issue might be, and then how I would go about confirming the problem?

Inspect the suspension, look for things obviously wrong, like loose or worn out parts, they will make popping noises.

A big one for the Commander is the Sway Bar bushings wearing out, cheap and pretty easy DIY job to fix. But it's always possible its ball joints, shocks or CV drive shafts, so look over everything.

Having just stopped mine from clunking and popping I can say it was'nt what is normally suggested. Mine was subframe bolts not tightened enough. I checked with a 3/8 drive ratchet first and they felt tight so I searched all the usual culprits before out of desperation I put a 1/2 drive breaker bar on the subframe bolts and was shocked how I could turn them almost 2 turns. Now amazingly there is ZERO popping.

Also transfer case bushings make noise commonly with wear but they are more of a clunk than a pop.

I'll start looking, but I literally know 0 about suspension, so I may need to google some diagrams. I do not have a transfer case. Thanks for the other suggestion.

Yea, you need to give a little information about your vehicle before asking for help figuring out problems.

So your Commander is RWD only? NOT 4WD/AWD? If it is 4WD or AWD, you have a transfer case. If its RWD only you do NOT have a transfer case, nor do you have a front differential, so disregard any advice about front differential bushings creating noise, or CV axle/driveshaft noise.

You don't have to be a suspension expert to look one over and notice an end link has torn up rubber and there is lots of free play in the link. That is the sort of thing to look for.

Do you have the torque spec for the subframe connector, or did you just get under and crank til it stopped?lol I have the same problem.
