Newbie questions about Lift and Tire Clearance.

I didn't want to hijack bigconn16's threat "im lost as **** with lift kits and need help", though the title and contents within have been pretty similar. I will preface this by saying that although I am new and fairly ignorant I have tried to do some research so I'm not asking questions that are toooo dumb. I have a mild understanding of the differences between body, level, and suspension lifts.


I picked up an 07 Limited Commander, but the previous owner had some massive tires on and I need clearance for chains/cables come the winter season. I've also heard the tires grind against the mud flaps while doing minor off roading. They are 245 75r17s





Big Blue posted useful information on the Rough Country kit, which happened to be the kit a local 4x4 shop recommended me (but quoted 700+ to install). My questions are:

Would this kit work with the tires? The local shop said they couldn't confirm but that "they should" which isn't comforting.
Would there be enough clearance for cables/chains?
Is there a different kit I should be looking at?

I should also note I had the vehicle inspected by the jeep dealer and they said one of the rear shocks is leaking but that it isn't a big deal. If this so happens to change any of the above answers.

So I was able to find out that Rough Country recommends running 265/70R17 with their kit. And through the handy usage of tiresize's calculator I see that what I have, 245/75R17 pretty close.




I'm assuming this means I'm alright?

Any 2" or bigger lift will allow you to clear those tires with chains or cables. However, if you're still running the stock rear shocks, you might want to upgrade to some with longer travel. A 2" lift keeps them fully extended and may cause premature wear, and since you already have a leaking shock, upgrading those with the lift would be a smart move. It's also worth noting that the Rough Country lift is a spacer lift, so while you'll gain clearance for tires, you won't gain any articulation like you would with the OME or Superlift.

A 2 inch lift will give you plenty of clearance with your current tires. 26570R17's are the tires I'm running with my 2 inch Rough Country lift.

As far as your shocks and struts go, you can upgrade them but is not required for a 2 inch lift.

A lot of people will tell you to go to a longer shock but again, it's not required for a 2 inch lift.

I'm running Bilstein HD 4600 shocks and struts with Chrysler Hemi-rated rear coil springs that I had installed new with the Bilstein shocks and struts.

I don't believe the 4600 rear shocks are any longer than the factory shocks and they are NOT close to being fully extended.

I love them and they perform great with my lift and tires.

I found this pretty interesting.

For all of the arguments I have heard about Bilstein 5100's being a longer shock, thus the reasoning by many for using 5100's in the rear vice 4600's, here are the specs of the HD 4600's compared to the adjustable ride height 5100's straight off of Bilstein's website:

That is for the front struts. The front suspension is limited in downtravel because it is IFS so longer struts than that wont do us (or any vehicle with IFS) any good. The rear is different.

In fact those don't look like the correct shocks for the xk/wk at all. The xk 5100's should be like 19" extended... Part Number: 24-225793


The p/n's you have listed appear to be for toyota fj/4runner/taco '03-15

You'd be fine with that lift and those tires.

Your shocks are likely toast if they are original, and a touch longer in the rear wouldn't hurt... you have to remove them to install the lift anyways so its a good time to have those taken care of.

I'd consider OME springs... like ~$150 a pair so only $150 more in parts than just the RC lift.

It's kind of pissing me off that I can't find the specs for the collapsed & extended length of this shock. I know it's not as long as the 5100 but I still want to know what those specs are.
