Code P0128 = Coolant Thermostat Malfunction

Well Thursday night, I found out how well my extended warranty holds up.

My wife had the XK as we'd had flooding rain the night before and didn't want to drive her MX5 in those areas. As she was driving home, the check engine light came on, first CEL I've ever had in the XK.

She got home, nothing seemed untoward with the Jeep, she arrived safely. I checked the DTC report (turning the key to ACC 3 times in succession) and it came back with the 'P 0128' code.

Looking on this vast fountain of knowledge we call the 'jeepcommander forum' it narrowed it down to the 'Thermostat failing'.

I called my local Jeep dealer to confirm this and if it was ok to drive the XK as it was. I mentioned I was only 2000 past my warranty and I would have to use my extended warranty that I purchased at the Lincoln Mercury dealer I bought the XK from.

Jeep suggested I take it to the Lincoln dealer first. So that's what I did. Called up on Thurs night, made an appt for yesterday morning, had it booked in.

Turned up yesterday morning, they did a bunch of diagnostic checks as I arrived, while I was waiting for a lift to work.

Before I even left, they confirmed it was the thermostat sticking open, not allowing the engine sensor to realize the Jeep was up to operating temperature.

Had a call about 10am to say the part was available, it was covered under warranty, and that it would be ready today.

4pm, had a call the Jeep was ready, went to the dealer, they had not only fixed the Jeep, CEL was gone, but they had washed it for me as well.

So I had a $100 deductible on the warranty (unlike the Chrysler extended warranty) but then I only paid $600 for the 5 year/60000 mile extended Lincoln Mercury warranty - so I can't complain too much.

I was wondering how this would all work out - and so far - very well.
