Code P0430 = Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold

Anyone had this code come up? I replaced the muffler about a month before this code came up. Apparently it covers everything from cats, O2 sensor, exhaust leak, blah, blah.

Normally I wouldn't care because it is a emmision component but since this vehicle was imported from the USA into Canada, I have no emmisions warranty....

If anyone has had this issue and what resolved this, I would appreciate the advise

I had a P0420 and they had to replace the whole cat. Hard to say what the difference to 0430 would be.

Clear the code and see if it returns.
As you found, that is kind of a catch all code.
I'll try to keep it simple....The ECM is comparing the information it recieves from the 02 sensors prior to and after the catalyst.
The wavelength info will be fairly active ahead of the cat and fairly smooth after the cat indicating the catalyst is doing its job.
Any vacuum leak or exaust leak that will allow air into the exaust during negative pulse moments (between cyl firing events) can cause the ECM to interpet info that is out of range, hence, ck eng light.
Do make certain there are no exaust leak points forward of the 02 sensors.
If the code does not recur, you are left with it being a momentary anomoly and nothing more.
Good luck,
Rob

Riddle solved!
Some Damned fool took this luxury SUV off-road and put a crack in the Cat converter which toasted the O2 sensor.

My mechanic replaced the O2 sensor, welded the Cat and flushed the Cats......OOPS
Guess I should invest in the 4X Guard Cat skid plate when I can afford to.
Of course, now that the lift is installed, I should have a little more clearance under there

My XK is currently throwing this code. I will erase the code and hopefully it goes away.

The only difference between an P0430 and P0420 is the bank that has the Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold. One code is for bank 1 and one code is for bank 2 but I cannot remember what code is for what bank. I am sure the info is out there.....somewhere.

P0420 OBD-II Trouble Code

Technical Description
Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

What does that mean?

The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions
system.

Symptoms

You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms.

Causes

A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

•Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
•An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
•The engine coolant temperature sensor
is not working properly
•Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
•Retarded spark timing
•The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings

Possible Solutions

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 code include:

•Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
•Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
•Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
•Replace the catalytic converter
One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

The code came back a few days ago and the exhaust fumes are really bad. No smoke, just really strong exhaust fumes smell. I will be taking it to the dealership tomorrow morning.

Well, the dealership had to order a new cat. They also want to complete further testing on the XK when the cat comes in next week. I'll have to drop off the XK and leave it there for a day. Hopefully there's nothing else wrong. I'll keep everyone posted on the status.

There is a TSB for the P0430 and P0420 codes: http://www.xkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_xk_1800408a.pdf
