XK in Moab?

My brother and some other friends just spent the weekend in Moab. There were two lifted early Ď70ís Broncos, two lifted í97 Grand Cherokees, a lifted í91 Wrangler and my lifted Commander. One Bronco busted two knuckle u-joints, one Grand Cherokee twisted a front driveshaft and two Rocky Road poly spacers on the same GC split and failed (gee, go figure). As for the Commander Ė nothing broke. I pounded the crap out of the supersliders, dinged up the back bumper pretty good and tagged the right rear wheel. That was all pretty much expected though and Iíll probably do it again next year. We did Hellís Revenge where I attempted Tip-Over Challenge. I got to the top but had a line where the front kept sliding sideways, and Iíve seen videos of guys who donít give up. Rather than land on my lid, I backed down, which was a process in itself. We also did Kane Creek Canyon which had some challenge to it. We caught up with a stock H2 that somehow had high centered with all four wheels off the ground. We got him loose and did some stacking to get him up the shelf (pic below). It was messy but he made it up after that. With QDII, the Commander simply drove up the same shelf (and on the same stacked rocks), no tire spin at all. In fact, it seems so controlled, it doesnít kick rocks out like the other rigs in our group were doing. Iíve got to say that the Superlift 4Ē system was amazing. And the Jeep engineers get kudos for that QDII system. For those who havenít explored the limits of that system, it virtually locks both diffs and I believe uses individual corner-braking to help control traction. It ignores wheels in the air and just keeps going. Everyone in our group was floored by how easily the Commander tackled obstacles (when clearance wasnít the issue, of course!). Even the Grands, which were locked in front and factory limited slip in the rear had a tougher time on occasion, even though they smoked me in articulation. For next year I will look at disconnecting at least the rear stabilizer bar (need longer brake lines) and Iíll go to 285/70 KM2ís. The Commander is a sleeper, nobody assumes theyíre very capable, but my rig opened some eyes (including mine) this weekend!

Looks like you had a great time Ken! Love to hear the Superlift did well on the Commander there. I'm heading out that way this summer.

Right now I have 265/70/17's. I was going to do 285's with this lift and transfer the 265's to my wife's XK, but hers has 18's on it, so I get to wear these out first. Interestingly, approach angle was not an issue the entire weekend. The front bumper went unscathed. But obviously the departure angle isn't ideal for this type of 'wheeling.

I think you also earned a new badge for your Commander at Moab...

Thanks! Even though the Commander itself didn't do any recovery, I'll take it! The guy driving the Hummer was a pretty good driver, I was amazed he got something that wide up where he did. But when he got it stuck, there was daylight under every tire. He was high centered on the rock with the undercut on the left side of the first picture. We pulled him backwards and got him lined up to go up the shelf. His skidplates took some huge hits, but he survived without breaking. Here's three more pics from Hell's Revenge. I don't have any from Tip-Over Challenge, I was too busy trying not to dump a 40K rig.

Ken,

Love the pics. Can't wait to go out there.

Since you run the 4" Superlift and plan on going to 285 tires when you shred those 265s up, you may be interested in some suspension enhancements to the front end I recently did: https://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/...ead.php?t=4795

Most importantly are the heavy duty SPC ball joints that I used to replace those wimpy OEM ones. On the Superlift with the angle of your upper control arm to the knuckle, I think you will find in time those OEM ball joints will give out.

Tom -
I saw your write up - what a great set of mods that is. I have a year to figure out a few things before we go again and I plan on doing the front end work you've shown. Thanks!
