No pink Jeeps here...

Storm moved in on us and we got hit with a monsoon drenching...

Mix a little rain with these dirt trails and our day became a whole lot more challenging...

It is a good thing that there were not any Pink Jeeps there. You would have tried to race them thru the junction and run over another one. Just because they are Pink is no reason to try and crush them like a Monster Truck.

Good Pictures. Looks like a good time. Do you carry long bolts just in case?

The holes got larger and deeper just looking to swallow up a little Wrangler...

Winch power to the rescue...

Elk sighting...

Welcome to our hell for the next 3 hours. This part of the trail slopes down a hill in the slick ruts that I am standing in front of the Commander. The slope takes you right into an angled part of the trail that will easily flip any vehicle into the 3ft deep mud swamp just above my head. How do we know this you ask? Well the ATVs led the way on the trail and one of them came straight down here hit the washed out trail and flipped the ATV upside down into the mud swamp. He was ok. Only course of direction was to go to the right thru the other mud hole but first to try and get over the deep, slick ruts. The wrangler ended up sideways in the second mud hole, bumper first into the huge tree. Winch and pulleys got it straightened out and down to 3rd mud hole. Got Wrangler turned around facing back to me to help winch out ATV and also to assist me But I was determined to get the Commander over those slick ruts.

Well, the Commander was so heavy that it would just slide down the hill right for the mud swamp no matter what we tried. So we finally dragged a tree down across the washed out part of the trail to act as a guard rail. Tires grabbed up on the side of the tree and with a little extra winch help up and over the slick ruts but not at the angle I wanted. I am now lined up for the second mud hole.

Time to hit the second mud hole. Well, I went for it and could not get the Commander to cut the angle.

So get the winch hooked back up to pull me straight...

Ouch, plastic bumper pushed out of place. As I had mentioned, it took us three hours to clear this part of the trail. We had to winch the Commander 3 times using pullies from trees, we had to winch the Wrangler 6 times because not only did we have to just get her thru, but then we had to turn her around to use for me and the ATV. The ATV was winched twice, once to flip over, then to drag out of 3ft mud. It still ran after all that!

It is now about 5:30pm in the National Forest. Storm has passed, trails are mud slick and full of holes, Commander has a flesh wound, ATV is caked in mud but still opperational, no one hurt, kids are getting upset that we will never make it out of the forest, you can hear coyotees off in the near distance and we still have two creek crossings, one river crossing and about 5 miles to go to get out. Our fun day has now turned into a test of knowledge right out of the "Mark A. Smith Guide to Safe, Common Sense Off-Road Driving" book.

Creek crossing number 1. Its getting dark. Wrangler took three shots to get up the steep, slick embankment of this creek. Good thing someone thru a bunch of logs in the creek bottom to help with traction. Commanders turn. Lining up...
By the way, notice the 5ft high creek wall just to the passanger side of the hood of my Commander...

That's where my Commander decided to slide over to as I went up the embankment. It was so slick. So my rear wheels literally climed that wall. It was crunch time. If I let up on the HEMI, you could tell we were going to slide backwards right into the creek at the 5ft wall. Wife was praying, son was crying and I opened up the HEMI and literally bounced out over the top. I stopped and my daughter says, "That was fun daddy, can we do it again?"

We pressed on over the other creek and over the river. Wow the river crossing was the easiest part of the trail and most beautiful at 8pm. This is my friend Jim who flipped the ATV earlier in the day. It is so dark out now and he and his wife are leading the way on the ATVs.

No more pics of the trail at this point because it is dark. Its a good thing I have those K/C lights up top. They lit up the forest like the sun was coming back up. We make it home at 10:30pm. Soaking wet and muddy and ready for a beer...

This morning was clean up time. The amount of mud packed up in the suspension and undercariage is unreal. Even the pressure washer had a tuff time cutting thru this caked on mud.

Looks worse than it really is. Just the plastic molded facia pushed in, light bracket bent down and the plastic rivets popped. Time for a GetLost4x4 bumper and Winch!!!

The amount of tree branches I collected up on the roof rack was crazy!

Well thats my weekend adventure. We learned a lot this weekend about off roading and winching. My 7yr old son has said he will not go on another "Jeep Jamboree" with me...well we talked about it and I think he will go out with me again as long as it is in the desert where there are no trees and mud. LOL

4.7 get ready to make another bumper, I'll be ordering one sometime in the near future as soon as funds allow.

looks like a great time. I had the same thing happen to me with the trees in the rack. I had a few that got pinned between the side rails and the roof that were hard to get out.
