Canyon De Chelly - Chinle, AZ - 2009

Well, we loaded up the Commander and headed up to Northern AZ for our 3rd anual trip to Canyon De Chelly in Chinle, AZ. We joined up with the JJUSA group for their 18th annual event and met up with some of our non- Commander Jeep friends. It was cooler than normal up there, the winds were gusting at 45mph at times and there was water in the canyon. In the canyon, when water mixes with the sand along the river basin, you get these cool pockets of quicksand and Jeeps would just get sucked in and stuck up to their frames. Quite amazingly, the XK did very well in these areas and never once got stuck even with some failed attemps by my friend and trail guide Phil. Not sure if it was the brand new BFG Muds at 18lbs of pressure or the abilities of the QD II. It sure didn't have anything to do with the driver as all I did was hit the gas and brake.
We had a great time!

A few videos to follow as the XK attempted to extract a WK stuck up to his frame...

I imagine that your son was more relaxed on this trip that on the broken arrow trail. Good pictures, Did you use a zoom lens for the rattler. I guess that there were no Pink Jeeps around to practice climbing on.

WK stuck in the quicksand. As I backed the XK into place, you felt like you were driving on Jello.

First we tried with just one strap to get them popped out of their hole:

After we realized the amount of suction that was holding them in, we tried two straps without success.

So then we hooked up a winch to apply constant pressure and then popped the WK out with a little tug on the strap. The Wangler in the middle with the winch sunk into the quicksand as it tried to pull. After we got the WK out, another group drove right into the same mess and got three more stuck but not as bad. It was fun!

After the area was clear of all stuck Jeeps, my friend and our trail guide Phil suggests (dares) that I try driving thru the same area slowly. So I can't pass up the opportunity to see what the XK can do. Of course that is my wife yelling at me that I am going too slow. So I went back in a second time real fast with water and sand a flying and she forgets to hit record....sure can't find a good videographer these days.

Actualy my son was concerned that we would sink in the quicksand. In cartoons, they go all the way under in quicksand so he thought the same would happen to us.

So, the heavier vehicle doesn't get stuck, but the lighter one does... interesting. Your XK just seemed to go through like it was no big deal.
