War Between the States (Michigan and Ohio)

This is funny....
"Ohio Governor Robert Lucas, another Jackson Democrat, sent 40 men to guard his surveyors and ordered the 100,000 members of the state militia to assemble in the tiny town of Perryville, Ohio, just down the Maumee River from Toledo. Only 10,000 actually responded and most of them never got to Perrysville, because they got lost in the swamp."

Governor Mason issued the “Pains and Penalties Act” of February 12, 1835, making it illegal for a non-Michigan resident to enforce Ohio law in Toledo, Michigan Territory.

A guy in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and says, “Wanna hear a Buckeye joke?” The guy replies, “Well, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I am 6′ tall, 200 lbs. and I am an Ohio State graduate. The guy sitting next to me is 6’2″, 225 lbs., and he is an Ohio State graduate. The guy right next to him is 6’5″, 250lbs., and he is also an Ohio State graduate. Now, you still wanna tell me that joke?” The first guy says, “No, not if I’m going to have to explain it three times.

Here's more on that epic war (from Wikipedia):
An almost bloodless conflict between Ohio and the Michigan Territory, called the Toledo War (1835–1836), was "fought" over a narrow strip of land from the Indiana border to Lake Erie, now containing the city and the suburbs of Sylvania and Oregon. The strip—which varied between five and eight miles (13 km) in width—was claimed by the state of Ohio and the Michigan Territory due to conflicting legislation concerning the location of the Ohio-Michigan state line. Militias from both states were sent but never engaged. The only casualty of the conflict was a Michigan deputy sheriff—stabbed in the leg by Two Stickney during the arrest of his elder brother, One Stickney—and the loss of two horses, two pigs and a few chickens stolen from an Ohio farm by lost members of the Michigan militia. In the end, the state of Ohio was awarded the land after the state of Michigan was given a larger portion of the Upper Peninsula in exchange. Stickney Avenue in Toledo is named for One and Two Stickney.

So, we got the UP in trade for Toledo; I think we won that deal

Don - is your real first name a number? When One and Two had kids - did they put a decimal (one point one) after their kids' names? Just askin'

We've got Kwame Kilpatrick. So, he technically moved to TX, but he's still from day-twa. Takes a special kinda guy to steal all that money from poor folks' taxes and still have a lot of those same folks sayin' how he got a bum rap.

I also have to say that I like the Toledo Zoo better than the Detroit Zoo.

The worst part of Toledo though, is it's in (urp!) Ohio..

I met my wife in Toledo.

Then there is the "Lost Peninsula"
Quote:
The Lost Peninsula is a small part of Michigan that became separated because of the 1835 Toledo War, changing the Michigan/Ohio Boundary. It was also the staging area for rum runners, bringing illegal spirits into the United States from Canada.
The Lost Peninsula

The Detroit Zoo isn't even in Detroit. It's in Royal Oak, a full 2 miles from the Detroit city limit. They have a really cool Arctic Ring of Life exhibit. If you're ever in the area and have time stop in to check it out.
