I've been browsing this forum a lot and today I am going to test drive a commander and hopefully take it home! It is a 2008 Black Sport trim with the 3.7L V6. Is there anything that I should look out for or any common issues to be aware of for Commanders?
Thanks! Hopefully I'll have some new pics to share later.
This forum is full of common Commander issues, if you have been browsing this forum and reading, you should have seen plenty of them already. Particularly in the Regular Service / Maintenance
and the Problems / Dealer Service
sections of the forum.
First off, you won't be breaking any speed records with the 3.7L V-6. That engine puts out 210 HP and 235 ft/lbs of torque from the factory. I had a 2008 Grand Cherokee Laredo (Rocky Mountain Edition) with the 3.7L V-6 and it was under-powered; I can only imagine it's worse in a Commander, which is less aerodynamic, larger and slightly heavier than a Grand Cherokee.
Also don't think you will be getting better gas mileage with the V-6 as opposed to a V-8, the V-6's are just as ****ty on gas as the V-8's are.
You also aren't giving us very much information - is it a 4WD or 2WD?
If it's 4WD - does it have Quadra-Trac I or Quadra-Trac II 4WD? If you have Quadra-Trac II 4WD that means you have a 2 speed transfer case - and if you do, make sure you can shift into and out of 4-LOW without any problems or Service 4WD System DTC's being generated.
One thing I can tell you to definitely look for; Check the headliner very carefully for water stains - particularly around the sunroof - if it has one.
Commanders are pretty notorious for water leaks from clogged sunroof drains, also check the headliner around the front of the driver's side front door and the front of the passenger's side front door, around where the outer edge of the sun visors are - if you have bad door seals - or if your doors are out of alignment, you will see watermarks/stains in the headliner in this area also.
Also take a good luck underneath it for rust and possible fluid leaks.
Hope this helps, good luck.
