Might of found my Commander

I have been looking for a while and a 2006 4.7 65th anniversary edition has appeared at a dealership in my town. Fortunately we know one of the dealer owners.he let us keep the commander for the weekend . The interior is almost like new , paint is fantastic , new tires, and ran great. Now the bad we got the trans temp warning once for about 20 sec , there is a exhaust leak from manifold and a coolant leak. The ignition recall has not been done so they are doing that, they are repairing exhaust problem and pressure checking leak to make sure the problem does not go deeper than it appears. We really like it but as with any used vehicle a bit nervous. I have been through sereral CJ's and turned a lot of wrenches on them . I just am not looking for something to have to work on constantly

Hopefully it works out. How many miles does it have on it?

Unfortunately, with Commanders, you can't judge a book by it's cover.

My Commander looked really clean too when I bought it and I had a laundry list of issues I had to deal with in the first year of owning it which I just posted here:

https://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/...knowledge.html

How much you have to work on it will really come down to two things:

1) How much the previous owners beat on it;

2) How well the previous owners maintained it; or how badly have they neglected it.

The fact that the ignition recall - which has been out & well-publicized for about 3 years now, has not been completed yet, I would take as a bad sign.

I interpret it as an indication that the previous owners, have not kept up on what I'd consider normal routine maintenance. If they couldn't get that Commander in to the dealership for a recall repair that would cost them nothing - what else have they neglected to do?

That's just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

I agree that the lack of doing the recall did raise a concern. After checking the car fax I have discovered a very good maintenance schedule. Also I see a post on car fax about ignition being done just not at a dealership. I am not sure if it was same thing or not. But if car fax is accurate the maintenance was as close to recommend schedule as I have seen. Still I am not sold completely, after dealership is done with whatever they are doing I am taking it to my mechanic to be gone over

Exclamation Dealership

If you are going to be buying it from this dealership in the end ask if they will offer an after market warrenty. We were able to get one for 4 Years or 48,000 miles, it cost somewhere around $ 2,600 but well worth it in peace of mind, as we are not the first owners.

Good call taking it to your mechanic.

I can tell you this much; you'll find out in fairly short order, how well it was or wasn't maintained.

If you make it through the first 4 months without any serious issues, you're probably in pretty good shape.

Welcome!

Exhaust leak is common, so that will be an afternoon. There are a few very good how-to write ups on the forum for hitting it and even some easy YouTube videos you can google (I did that for mine).

Coolant leak from my experiences has been at the upper hose connection on the motor. I had a very tiny leak that drove me nuts since it was intermittent. I switched out my hose and all was good. The hose may not have been bad, but I retightened everything during the install and that was probably the true fix.

As with any used vehicle, conduct all the maintenance items listed at or after the 75,000 mile mark in the manual... those never get done.
