Big Trouble In Snowy Michigan

Hey Jeepsters,

Where do I begin other than to tell you guys a little more about my XK and the problems that im having. I bought the rig this summer (my first jeep BTW) for the wife to replace her equinox lease that was due up. After a little dressing up she was ready to go.

A few days later I did run into so front end issues ( upper and lower ball joints and CV shafts) After taking it in to have the front end aligned from putting the lift on so back in the garage it went. After new CV shafts, upper and lower ball joints, and tie rod ends (might as well do it all while i'm under there as the truck has 200k+) I get it back to the mechanic and get the alignment done. here come the holidays and cold weather and the wife decides she needs to run to the store, backs down the driveway, gets to the end, and puts it in drive...no drive. Puts it back in reverse...no reverse. After back and for for a few she puts it in 4 low and was able to creep back down the driveway.

Anybody any ideas?

Was there any clicking when she first put it in drive? I had the same situation when I was at a customer's farm. I pulled in, took care of business and tried to back away from the barn and it clicked - and that was it. I was able to go forward so ended up driving through a field to get to the road and made it to a tiny Chrysler/Jeep dealership that diagnosed a bad shift module. I was stuck with no choices so had the dealership replace the module for $700 - was thankful they had the part in stock.

Anyway, after watching the tech work on it the repair is very straightforward. The module is attached to the driver's/left side of the transmission and is held on with three bolts IIRC and one wire harness. They had me on the road in an hour and I'd imagine it would be about 2 hours at home on the garage floor.

The frustrating part of the issue is there were no codes thrown and no indication of what it was until it was diagnosed at the dealership.

No clicking that i can hear but i haven't had the wife home to shift it back and forth. (My daughter is only three otherwise id have her helping her pops) but from what i'm seeing all signs are pointing towards the shift module.

08 Hemi Commander, QT2 diffs boo!, 2 inch lift, 265/70/17 Michelin donuts, and it even has the silent MYGIG radio option too this things almost loaded.

If by shift module you mean an actuator motor - that's about the going rate.

When they replaced the actuator motor on my transfer case, which from what I understand is quite similar to the shift module or actuator motor on the transmission, they charged me the same amount, a little over $700.00 and that was about 3 years ago.

Of course that was at the Jeep dealership here in Vero Beach, where I have come to find out that they overcharge for everything in comparison to what my regular dealership in Virginia Beach charges me.

Before you jump into that check another fix. Search YouTube for cleaning the Chrysler electronic shifter contacts. Trust me.

I watched the tech do mine and it was very straightforward - three bolts and the wire harness. Remove the bolts, disconnect the harness, a couple of taps on the side of the module to dislodge it and remove. Make sure the surface of the tranny is clean and put in the new one.

If I had been home instead of 3 hours away in a tiny town in the middle of farm country I absolutely would have done it myself. Doing the suspension was far more physically challenging - neither project is technically difficult.

Thanks guys. Looks like ive got some work ahead of me.... Ill probably try cleaning the shifter contactor first because i deal with alot of the same style of problems at work so im somewhat familiar...
