Me and My Problem Child

Hello, everyone. I'm Kevin. I have lived a number of places buy my current home is in the Denver area. For the past 6 years I have been the proud owner of a 2007 Commander Sport, 4wd QT-II. When everything's working.

I look forward to picking some minds about the issues I keep having, and would be happy to share my dealership/fix-it experience with y'all.

Current issue is a C230A Final Drive code. Servicee manual tells me a new FDCM is required.

Any reservations picking a matching numbers one up from a salvage yard?

Edit: Thanks for the links! Veritable gold mine right there!

If I were in your shoes and knew where to find one, I'd give it a shot as long as you can pick it up at a decent price, however, there is a potential snag.

Now I'm not 100% sure on this, but, even if you pick up a numbers matching FDCM, I still think you'd have to take it to Jeep and have them program it to your Commander's PCM/ECU for it to function properly.

Again, I'm not 100% sure - but I believe my above statement is correct, I don't think the FDCM's are just plug & play.

I found one for $60 from a salvage yard pre-N23.

From everything I've read, as long as it's same model or newer it should work fine. If all else fails, I can see if a local dealership will do N73 and P57 on the replacement.

Either way, I'm fairly certain it won't do any harm. Worst case is I'm just out $60.

In case you're wondering how I got this code, due to a former collision the rear-passenger door doesn't seal properly. After parking the Jeep next to an open field for months a few mice decided the Commander was a good place to set up shop. I have since evicted them and removed all traces of their existence (that was fun) but my latest theory is they damaged the FDCM by liquid intrusion around the connector.

I guess we'll see how that theory holds up on Monday!

Another update:
Tried to accelerate to merge on a dry, sunny day going about 30mph. The Jeep basically stalled, and I tried twice to accelerate. I looked down, and the ESP light was flashing for low traction, which is impossible.

I pulled over, put ESP into Full Off, and drove home without further issue. Evidence is definitely pointing to the FDCM. I only wish the replacement would get here sooner.

If there's any other opinions on that I'm all ears.
