So I've owned my Jeep since 2006 new off the lot and I've never had any issues, and have always done all the regular maintenance. About a week ago I started to hear a whirring noise coming from the rear end starting about 10mph and continues at any speed (regardless of acceleration, braking, turning, etc.). As the week went by it has gotten louder that now I have to talk over it. I changed my rear diff fluid as it was time to do that anyway but it did not get rid of the noise, but it did change the sound from being deeper sounding to a little bit higher pitch. I've checked the rear wheel bearings, and driveshaft for any play, but there isn't any. Anyone have any ideas what it can be?
Just speculating; It could possibly be that your rear axle needs fluid; I'd probably get that checked out. No DTC's showing up in the EVIC?
In any event, welcome to the forum; Post some pics of your Commander when you can; Here are some links if you want to order any parts for repairs or upgrades to your XK;
I did try changing the rear ends fluid with the OEM stuff with the friction modifier, and I made sure it was full according to the owners guide. The noise still persisted but it changed in pitch (going from a deeper whine to a higher whine.) I checked the rear wheel bearings again just in case, but that's not it either. Anything else I should look for that could be causing the noise?
It's no problem. I'm just lost as to what the noise it or what exactly is causing it. I'm going to try checking the run out and teeth engagement on the gears in the morning and maybe that will point me in the right direction.
It is hard to establish one Whiring noise from another
If it changes from acceleration to deceleration you might also check your u-joint in the rear driveshaft?
As you stated next places would be wheel bearing? But could also be brakes? usually higher pitched.
check your front driveshaft - it may sound like noise coming from rear due to harmonics but if you have a front ds with 2 rzeppa CVs, thats where I would look...
it may look fine, but ive had bad luck with mine, and when you open up the joints, no grease and lots of play - only found by taking the shaft off.
and second would be the isolator from the front diff cover to frame - if the rubber is shot, and rubbing metal against metal, then you will get driveline noise for sure...
