Burning Oil

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question that has probably been asked before. Its an issue I've never experienced with any other Jeep (I have a 92 YJ also).

We bought our Jeep Commander in 2008 and have since put 205k miles on it. Its clean and serviced regularly. At about 100k, I've noticed oil consumption … like 5 quarts in a weeks time. I use FULL SYNTHETIC, which seems to last longer than conventional oil, but still burns. The vehicle blows no smoke, no loss of power, no leaks, no mix of oil/coolant. Nothing. It is very strange.

We use the vehicle as our camping and recreational vehicle … as it runs very well, very strong and comfortable. I check the oil before every use. I took it camping last weekend, topped off the oil, drove about 200 miles and it was a quart low. In another example, I checked the oil, added 1 quart and drove the vehicle about 1000 miles (over 7 days) … at the end of the 7 days I checked the oil and there was NOTHING in it.

Has anyone had issues like this? Any of you pro mechanics ever heard of anything like this? Maybe just a Commander issue!?

The 3.7 ltr. engines can be oil burners. Chrysler says that even burning a quart of oil every 1000 mile is acceptable in this engine. The 3.7 engine in my son's Jeep TJ used to burn a lot of oil and this is what I did and it helped greatly.

First is replace your PCV valve as this can allow oil to be pushed into the intake tract and disappear. The PCV valves on the 3.7 are a push fit inside the connector and many times they are not seated and locked in properly and this will allow oil to pass right by the valve. Pull the valve out of the connector and see if it comes out easily or if it is difficult to remove. You most likely will damage the valve by removing it so put a new one in, they are cheap. It could also be a sticking PCV valve as well. A lot of synthetic oils won't smoke much and if being passed through the PCV valve it only happens under load at higher rpm. The second thing that can cause this is a stuck oil ring on the piston from carbon or varnish buildup. This can also happen from the PCV valve passing too much oil through the intake. There is a product called Archoil 9100 that is a friction modifier but is also known to really clean the ring lands (grooves) and pistons as it has really good detergent action. Even when running synthetic oil this can happen with or without a PCV valve issue. Archoil 9100 is also known to not loosen up carbon and sludge etc. too fast so it won't plug up filters and oil passages etc. Try using this product for a couple of oil changes and see if it helps. I have seen several engines that burned oil cured by using this product. A lot of diesel engine specialists swear by this stuff and it works great in gas engines too.

How much do you drive in a week? Using 5 quarts in a week is a lot of oil! I would think that if it was burning that much oil you would see some smoke or smell it. I'm thinking you must have a leak even though you haven't seen it. This is not a problem I have seen here before (using that much oil).

My son's Jeep TJ with the 3.7 engine would burn 2 qts. in less than 200 miles before I fixed it.

Was there any evidence of it burning oil? Smoke, smell, etc.? The OP says there is no sign of his XK burning oil other than it keeps getting low.

No evidence at all of oil burning - no smoke, no smell - the engine ran fine but it sucked oil like crazy.

I was also burning lots of oil in my 3.7l. I was getting a slight puff of blue smoke out of the exhaust at startup only. I was losing maybe a quart a week. At about 185k miles, I shelled out for a valve job which solved the problem. Now at 206k miles, I don’t lose any noticeable amount of oil between changes.

I was just 3 qts low on my hemi in 6 months, no smoke, or leaks, but do have smell. Think i maybe going to try the pcv, and the 9100 additive.
