Fender Flare options

Since nobody makes flares for our vehicle has anyone thought of a similiar size vehicle that might work. With cutout flares we could possibly fit a larger tire with the spacer lift.
Or I was thinking a highline type mod where we could just mount our stock flares higher. There are several tj guys that have done this.

I would like to have custom front and rear bumpers and could maybe adjust the design to make the flares fit better.

If someone works at a place that sells flares maybe they could try them out...just dreaming. Here is the xj and a suburban for reference.

I honestly don't think you'll find a vehicle that is similar enough to Commander to where youd be able to use their flares without totally hacking up your XK. With that being said you basically have two options. Either do what im going to do and trim both front and rear flares or make some custom fiberglass flares. After I rock the trimmed fenders for a while im going to make custom tube fenders.

The transformation will happen really soon. I just need to figure out what to do with the rear once I take out the plastic inner fender well. That and I need to order my rock rails.

No one has come up with it yet, leave it to 07JeepXK to lead the way.

I might trim my front fender flares before the Rausch Creek trip this weekend. It all depends because I am extremely busy this week.

As for the tube fenders, when I get around the them I want to do something similar to the last pictures you posted but I want mine to have a more clean apperance when installed. Plus the would obviously be paint matched to the rest of the vehicle.

07 keep us posted...as I will probably follow you in your oh so wise leadership in modifications...lol

As I see it after looking at the link posted earlier...In delaware not sure about the other 49 states or oversees members I am only legal if I have fenders that stick out as far as the edge of the tire.

I guess tire coverage would be an issue for some for sure. Not in GA and FL where I spend my time. Here is what I was originally thinking before I fell off the deep end.

This guy modified a nissan fender flare to fit a exploder sport trac. I think maybe it is in Iceland like those Iceland expedition rigs. It was in english but the names were a giveaway.

Forgive me I'm a little obsessed....

Im not sure what the laws are here in NY for how far your tires can stick out but at the same time i'm really not worried about it. Not to many cops worry about petty stuff like that though. However im not sure how that would effect state inspections for some people. Some shops do a half [removed] inspection anyways and let stuff like that slide.

What I plan on doing to the XK until I can make some tube fenders is just trimming both the front and rear flares. With my 1.25 inch wheel spacers the tires only stick out a hair from the fender flares and are definately still legal. The way I play on cutting them really isnt going to change how far the tires stick out, it will just give more over an inch more clearance all the way around for larger tires.

What do you think It will look like when you cut? Will It be hollow in the middle of the flare? will it be two independent pieces that flap in the wind?Maybe mounting the stock flares higher on the body would also work. Or a combination of both, maybe cut a little and remount.

The fender flare wont flap in the wind because it will still be connected to the fender and bumper. Its hard to explain what my plans are but maybe I can get a good picture of the fender flare tomorrow and show you how and where im going to cut them. Also how I plan on doing it will eliminate the plastic inner fender well liners. Im going to have my wifes cousin make me some new ones out of sheet metal and spray them with rubberized undercoating. That way the engine compartment wont get all dirty when off roading.

I was actually just looking at the Bushwacker website today. Im not to fond of how their fender flares look, but if you could gain clearance for larger tires then who really cares what they look like. If we were to get enough people to call maybe they can make us some.

Also in the end Id probablly rather have the bushwackers over tube fenders since they weigh a lot less. Im trying to reduce weight from our already heavy XK, not add more.

Id be interested as well as she wants to get larger tires...ill try to sneak in the wheel spacers and flares and such...

We should make a new thread to see how many people would be interested so we can provide that list to bushwacker. If we were to get enough people to buy them, and possible pay if deposit if required then maybe we would be in luck.
