Another intake option...

Found this at a local performance shop. They had bins of random stuff and this intake is for a 79-93 5.0 Mustang and is made by Granatelli Motorsports. Got the tube with sleeve for $40, filter for $20, breather filter for $10. Had a local machine shop bore a hole for my IAT sensor and installed with a $2 pcv valve grommet from Advance. Total investment $90. Looks good IMO and sounds like I've got a shop vac under the hood when I open the throttle up.

Interesting. I wouldn't mind saving some money on a CAI. Its not isolated from air in the engine compartment though.

True, but when you've removed the inner fender well liners and stock air box, plenty of fresh air flows into the engine bay. I'd day it stays fairly cool. I'll try to remember to drive it with a thermometer by the intake and see what it gets up to.

I can guarantee you based on testing that something like that is lowering the performance of your Hemi. I wouldn't sit here and say considerably, but it's happening. It might be worth it to you and that's fine, if you like the loud noise, just know you've slowed her down and made her look like a cheap whore with bright red lipstick by putting such a cheesy intake on her.

That's can be debated since there are short ram intakes all over the web for Hemis boasting improved power over stock, especially since I'm running an exhaust. And the "seat of the pants" dyno feels certainly stronger from a roll. However, there isn't a 4 wheel dyno locally and whether I've gained or lost a few hp doesn't matter much to me. I cleaned up the engine bay some and don't plan on doing any drag racing anytime soon. Thanks for the input though.

I have to agree w/powerslave and briandi. The goal of a CAI is COLD AIR. You need to get the filter away from the engine and add a shroud. I've put CAIs on 2000 CLK430, 1977 Monte Carlo, several Jeep GCs, and 2005 ML500 and even built a few. Trust me, you would get more cool air from just removing the air box top and the snorkel. In addition you should try to use plastic or composites for the intake tube. Metal looks better, but it gets hot and retains heat from the engine.

Regarding the short rams, they usually have some way to suck air from outside of the engine bay. All this set-up is doing is pulling air from the highest and hottest part of the engine bay. If you want to build your own CAI use the Airraid, K&N, etc... as a template.

I could take pics but don't wanna beat a dead horse. I currently have no front bumper, or air box or inner fender well. There is a 2ft hole feeding cool air from below into the engine bay. I'm having a tube bumper made up so it will continue to have a 2ft hole for cool air to flow directly to the filter.

You're only fooling yourself.

LOL! Why? Just because these guys don't agree with you doesn't make them experts. If you like the sound and looks and you don't feel its doing any damage then its all good.
