My commander is due for a rear camera installation at my dealership and was wondering if anyone here has had it and experiences with it.

Let me know. I'm wondering if it is all worth it. I know for my wife, she is smaller and looking in the rear view isn't something that is easily done for her. The rear camera I'm hoping will assist that?

I have the backup camera and it is nice to have. Mine isn't integrated into nav unit which would be a lot better. I still use my mirrors primarily and camera just to see if anybody is behind me. The other day I had the back completely full and the window was blocked. It was really great to have in parking lots. I have some pictures posted in the pics section.

I believe it cost $589 - plus installation (which I believe is charged out at 2.5 hours). I'm still notn sure if I'll get the windshield-mounted monitor or if the image will be integrated into the Nav screen.

I'll find out in the next 5 days.

Can you find out the total amount that you will be spending on this. I think you are right that it's 589 + probably 250. Roughly around 700+ for the rear camera.

Just so you know, I have seen the rear camera. It's an external piece and not integrated into the DVD. Correct me if your dealer has something else. I know that in the 2007 models or later, they are expecting to release that but it's a totally different wiring and unit altogether which won't be possible to do in the 2006 models. Only time will tell I guess.

Took delivery today and as has been discussed here, the 06's have the monitor mounted on the lower left of the windshield.

Also, the dealership needed to cut a hole in the rear "overhang" above the license plate in order to properly install the camera. I wish Jeep would make a plastic template to cover the hole (much like the black plastic "cover" surrounding the tailgate siwtch).

Anyway, the system works great. I'm very pleased.

nutsnbolts, there is the Mopar accessory camera that is available to retrofit your Commander with a camera. This kit includes a small monitor that mounts near the left side of your dash.

This kit was also installed from the factory for early buyers of the ParkView system. In the past few weeks, this was changed for people who also ordered the navigation system. The REC radio has been modified to allow the video from the backup camera to be displayed on the navigation screen.

However, it appears for 2007, the Navigation System and the backup camera are being bundled as one option (at least on the Limited and Overland models).

I have it and I think the only downside is that you may rely on it too much. When I shift into reverse, there is a brief warning on the nav screen to the effect of "check all surroundings". Today I was backing out of a parking space, looking at the backup camera and I think it made me neglect to look all around- because out of nowhere there is a car driving by me. I was looking at the camera which shows me what is directly behind me. So, it is useful and good to have, but be careful and don't rely on it too much.
