I hate for this to be my first post here, but just picked up an 06 tonight with 4.7 and 57k on the clock. Having intermittent oil pressure light coming on. Is it just a sensor, or should I be taking it back to the dealer tomorrow?

Sensor or not, take it back. Oh, and welcome to the Forum. Stick around and learn a lot about your Commander. And give us some info on it and post some pics.

Welcome. Please explain intermittent. Does it come on when you are driving? This could indicate a bad sending unit, or more serious problems. When was the oil last changed? With my 06, sometimes when I start first thing in the AM, the oil lamp will stay lit. So, I restart and it goes out as normal, and won't do it again for the rest of the day. I've taken it to the dealer, but they can't find a problem. There are threads here where members have had the same problem as me and changed the sending unit. I assume this solved their problem, because it hasn't come back up on the forum.

Since you just got it, I'd take it back and let your dealer try and figure it out. :eek:rangehat:

The sensors have been known to go bad and give an erronous reading. There can also be a short in the wire harness causing the light to go off intermittently. As well, you can't rule out the engine is actually experiencing low oil pressure.

Check the engine oil level, to low or too high can cause air to get into the pump or the oil to foam, which can cause intermittent low oil pressure.

You want to confirm the actual engine oil pressure by connecting a gauge and reading that it is making the correct oil pressure.

And NOTE the circumstances you get the low oil pressure light. The lower the viscousity of the oil and pump speed, the lower the oil pressure that will be produced. So warm oil, with low rpm, like at idle waiting at a light, should be the lowest oil pressure you motor will make, if the light does NOT go on under those circumstances, I would be suspicious that it isn't the motor and the sensor. If you are getting low oil pressure lights while sitting at a light at idle with a warmed up motor, then its likely it is the motor that is making low oil pressure and if NOT worn out, it likely has already suffered excessive wear, I'd bring that vehicle back quick.

Sometimes the light comes on and stays on as soon as the vehicle is started, other times just when cruising along at speed; I've checked the oil level and it seems fine and not really dirty at all. It was a lease vehicle, and the Carfax report I have on it shows spot-on service intervals. Also, I noticed alot of salt spray under the hood, so I'm leaning more towards it being the sensor, possibly from corrosion. Either way, the dealer told me to bring it in tomorrow and he'll change the sensor.

I'm confident it will be a bum sensor.
You haven't indicated any unusual noises, it can happen cold or hot......the dealer likely will change the sensor, slap it on the bottom and ship it.
As far as a formal pressure check.....I love the idea as a mechanic but would hesitate to take the time to verify pressure unless the sender didn't resolve it.

My thoughts and opinion......you'll be fine,

BTW...Welcome aboard!

Hoping this is my issue. I have literally tore the whole inside apart running down shorts bare wires. I found 10 different wires either rubbed through or broke.
