Im just curious if a 16x8 wheel with a 5x5 bolt pattern and 4 7/16 backspacing would fit on my 2007 Jeep Commander 4x4. I know that the commander comes stock with a 17 inch wheel but need to know if a 16 inch wheel will clear the brakes/rotors/calipers?

If so i might eventually get a set of Mickey Thompson Classic II's with OMF beadlocks. However If the 16x8 wont fit on the commander ill go with the 17x9 Classic II with the OMF's. I really dont plan on lifting the truck for a few years and i think a 9 inch wide wheel wouldnt be practical for running a narrow tire.

Someone here must know the answer to this. Maybe i can somehow measure how much clearance my stock wheels have and see if an inch smaller wheel will fit?


This is what the OMF Bealock will look like on Mickey Thompson Classic II's. They are real Beadlockers. Those are the tires i am going to run also! Just not as big of course....

If you don't have at least 1/2" of clearance between the outermost part of your caliper and the inside of the wheel, then you'll never fit a 16" wheel.

I don't have a Commander, so I can't check for you, but my 4Runner came with 17" wheels and I definitely cannot fit 16" wheels due to brake clearance problems.

Can't you find some 17 x 8 wheels that you like?

I can't find 17x8 in a wheel that i like. If i had the 4 inch AEV lift i wouldnt mind the 17x9's but i want them to fix all the little issues before i were to buy it!

Isn't Phunkeydude running similar style wheels?

Beadlocks are a PIA for street driving. They are very difficult to balance and absolutely not necessary on a Commander as no way are you gonna be offroading in such a situation where you got to air down below 12psi OR anywhere near that. john

Actually those are the wheels that i am talking about but i am going to send them to OMF and have them custom beadlocked.

According to OMF these custom beadlocks are just as easy to balance as stock wheels and i was assured that i would have no issues in balancing them.

Also in a few years from now when i dont owe as much on the commander it will be getting the AEV 4 inch lift and will be driven offroad.

A few times now that i have been offroading i have blew out tires and having a beadlock wheel would have prevented it. I don't consider putting my truck in 4x4 and driving in my back yard offroading either!

Might surprise you to know that I have won 7 trophies with my TJ and have offroaded nearly every named trail in America, including the Rubicon. Thats all I do year round. So, I think I speak with experience. The Commander was not designed to be a rock crawler or even a mud runner. Its too big, too heavy and even with 33" tires will be too low to ever tackle a trail rated higher then say a 5 on a scale of 1-10 without suffering considerable damage, not to mention the IFS front axle. It is a great snow or other wet terrain vehicle, a nice forest trail offroader (which is what 90% of people that go offroad call offroading). If you wish to run serious trails or become a real rock crawler keep your Commander as your tow vehicle and buy a used TJ and modify it properly. You will save money in the long run and accomplish more of what you are dreaming of. john

Hey thanks for the advice. The main reason i wanted those wheels with the beadlock was for looks and then obviously so i wouldnt have to ever worry about blowing tires of the wheel. But i guess you have a good point. There is only so much you can do with the commander. Maybe ill do what you said and use the commander for a tow vehicle and get a better capable off road veh.

Well, you can start by subscribing to JP Magazine (jeeps only) and Petersons 4wd magazine (all types of 4wd vehicles). Both are inexpensive and provide a wealth of information as to what is available and what is important. Also join a local jeep club. I did neither of above when I began in 1989 and made some costly mistakes learning by trial and error. Personally, I think offroading is a most wonderful sport. My wife and I have seen things hardly any human being will ever witness in the wilderness. My TJ is now pretty much bulletproof as it has to be since often we are all alone out there. Also, begin buying tools (jeep never found a fastener it didnt love so you need damn near everything. haha.). Take your time and wait for the that BARGAIN that will come along in a used TJ. Lay out a plan for what you intend to use it for and modify accordingly. john

Haha, ain't that the truth! Even on my 1955... I thought I would be set with my 150+ piece Craftsman socket set. Then I found that there were some relatively huge bolts that needed both a big size and a deep socket. I have ended up buying about 10 additional sockets and am not even quite half way done with the disassembly. :rolleyes:

Not sure if anyone wants an update, but i have found out that it would be physically impossible to clear a 16 inch wheel on the front of the commander due to the caliper being in the way! It looks like id have to stick with 17 inch Mickey Thompson Classic II's if i end up doing anything the the commander in the future!
