3.0 CRD - UK Version - Lower Pair Of Headlights

396 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  rblapham
In the Operating and Service Manuals for my Jeep Commander, the lower pair of headlights are referred to as "High Beam". However, on my car they are what we refer to as the "Side Lights". (i.e.They come on at the first position of the rotary light stalk switch)
These bulbs are absolute pigs to access and replace. Does any owner of a UK spec car know the correct replacement bulb type for the lower headlights?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I have the same problem with the sidelight bulbs. My nearside bulb has been out for a while. I can't even get my hand in there to remove the bulb and check what type it is 😒. Also, not sure how to remove it if I could get at it (I.e. turn clockwise or anti-clockwise, then pull, etc. etc. 😒
Are these sidelight bulbs supposed to be yellow (like a turn signal ?).

I feel your pain! the offside one was easier to access because there is a little flap in the wheel arch you can open and stick your hand through. However on mine, there isn't one on the nearside! I had to lay under it with a torch in my mouth! If managed to find the fitting, twist it clockwise and just pull the wedge bulb out. And no they don't have to be yellow as we are in the UK. They are actually the same bulb that's in your car interior (T10 501 Bulbs). I bought a pack of 10 LED ones from amazon and swapped the ones in the headlights and all the interior ones too! If you click on my reply signature thingy you can see a picture of mine if you wanna see how they look.

Thanks again for your reply. Mine has the wheel arch liner access flap on both sides. I've opened the nearside flap, but there seems to be a load of wadding of some sort behind it, so I'm not sure if I would be able to access the side light bulb via this flap 😏. I've been considering removing the battery, to see if that gives better access to the side light bulb, but not sure if it's worth the effort 😏
Thanks also for the clarification on the side light bulb type. Being an Electrical Engineer, I'm a great fan of LED lighting. I have it throughout the house, garage and workshop. I'll look into changing all the 501 wedge bulbs to LED, as you have done. They last much longer and consume a fraction of the power.
I'm having horrendous problems with mine at the moment, with the dashboard lighting up like a Christmas Tree, usually when accelerating up an incline. Lift off the throttle pedal and all warning lights go out, except the Throttle Position Sensor light and BAS light. The car drives normally whilst all this is going on. I've had the ECU checked and it's not that. Fault codes from a scanner list multiple Canbus communication issues. Personally, I think it's a faulty Throttle Position Sensor or Throttle Body Assembly, or a combination of both. Any ideas?

Finally managed to replace the nearside sidelight (T10 501) bulb) but the the replacement bulb lit momentarily, then blew.
Any ideas what the problem could be here ?
Do you use 12VDC like here in the USA? Or something metric? Have you tried more than 1?
You said it blew so probably not a connector.
