Sometime back i posted a tread trying to figure out what transmission I have. Now I need to know about the transfer case. Do I have the NV245 or the NV140. I have the 3.7l V6 with QT2. I assume since I have QT2 i would also have the NV245...am i right? Manual doesn't help.

Also while we are talking about it I was wondering if there is anyone else on the forums with this set up? Robby (I believe) had mentioned it being somewhat rare. Anybody else have it?

I really agree.
The V-6 combination would have been more viable in my eyes.
But, Jeep was likely correct in making it an option knowing the majority of buyers were looking for a all weather all wheel drive vehicle, not a hill climber.
The responsibility for driveline combinations really falls on the dealership folks who order the floor inventory.
Some dealers have more knowledgeable ordering departments that may have chosen this optional combination to sit on the lot till sold.
Others, likely just ordered base 4X4 V-6's for the lot.
Evidently, more base units were ordered.

Well I crawled under there to double check. Thanks to the link L_PIKL posted I discovered that all New Venture Transfer cases have a data plate attached that identifies the model. The thing was a bugger to see I actually had to take the picture and zoom in to be able to read it. Its tucked back where no one could see it.

Here is a closer shot, plus digital zoom.

I went and got one of my wife's mirrors to see if i could get a better shot...Not much better but...

Does that look like a "J" on the end of the "245"? What would the "J" stand for?

Probably haven't updated their website for the Commander. If it fits the WK it will fit the Commander.

 as always you are right!

Still though, you get strange hits when you google it with and without the J.

The "J" does stand for "Jeep."

There seems to be the following letter designations after the model number:

  • "F" (Ford)
  • "C" (GM)
  • "D" (Dodge)
  • "J" (Jeep)

Look at page 8 in the attached PDF

The following link also has useful information.

I wonder what it would take to swap at QT1 for at QT2 for those who would like to have QT2 on their V6? Do you think you could swap the t-case and the shifter assembly and then be done? Or is there more to it then that.

I read on jeepforum.com how someone swapped a 247 for a 242 and all they needed was the t-case and shifter bezel. Could the same work for other V6's out there that want to swap their 140 to a 245?

I think it would be a little more involved then that but definately possible.

Fstop 28,
I'm attaching a earlier post started by 07Jeep XK on this transfer case.
Since it sounds like you are the only 3.7 with OTII you can probably answer the most questions. From earlier research the 245 wouldn't bolt up to the 3.7 transmission.
So the missing link here is what trans do you have that accepts the 245 and how does that bolt up to the 3.7??????????????????????

Well I took some pictures that may help...I am pretty sure I have the NAG1 W5A580 Transmission...but could find nothing to confirm it. It is hard to tell where the transmission ends and the t-case begins. But it looks as if there could be some kind of spacer/adapter between the two.

Here are some pics that may help anyone wanting to swap in the 245.

Transmission Sticker

Front Drive Shaft:

Rear Drive Shaft:

What looks like a spacer/adapter: left arrow and to the left is the Transmission...Right arrow and to the right is the T-case. You can see some kind of writing on the side.

Where the t-case meets the Transmission:
