Well first, is it as simple as adding the engine driven fan to upgrade to factory towing package for cooling? What I'm getting at, is the existing electric fan, fan shroud, radiator, etc the same between the non and tow package 4.7L Commander?

I really don't know, but you could find you buy this fan and it doesn't fit because the tow package has a totally different fan shroud, primary electric fan, etc. Or it doesn't cool nearly as well, because it designed to work with a bigger radiator, etc. OR, maybe the base cooling system is designed to add just an engine driven fan to make it the tow package cooling system, I don't know, but its something you should find out before buying a fan to find out it doesn't fit.

As far as special tools, I have NOT installed an engine driven fan on a Commander. I have replaced the viscous clutch on a '95 Jeep Cherokee that is remarkably similiar to the parts and setup in your pictures of the Commander setup. I was able to do it with hand tools, didn't use a torque wrench to get exact torques, and did it more than once (had to remove the fan for other maintenance jobs) and never had a problem for more than 100k miles.

I used blue loctite on all the bolts (part cause I didn't use a torque wrench, as well its always smart for any bolts on rotating parts). The bolts for fan to viscous clutch, you can grab hold of a fan blade to get more than enough leverage to torque the bolts down. The viscous clutch to the water pump, the fan blades won't provide leverage, the viscous clutch will turn when applying torque. You have two options, I used a large flat head screwdriver applied to the shaft and one of the bolt heads to hold the water pump still to torque down those bolts. You could also tighten down the bolts as tight as possible with what little leverage you have, then install the accessory drive belt, the belt should hold the water pump still enough to apply the needed torque to the bolts.

I would consider adding a trans temp gauge, it is easy to spike trans oil temps to insane levels when towing heavy loads. Hot enough can damage seals and gaskets and damage the trans immediately, really hot for more than a few minutes will destroy the fluid and that will result in destroying the trans not long after.

Many people have had positive experiences with AMSOIL signature multi-vehicle ATF (it states on the bottle it exceeds the specs of ATF+4) and I have yet to hear a negative experience with it. That fluid can withstand higher temps and extreme usage than even ATF+4.
