i just went through the whole suspension to try to figure out what is clunking in the suspension.

i get a clunking sound up front and out back.

i used the Rusty's lift kit.

i checked every bolt. they are tight.

the spacers are seated in the rear and the springs are in the right way.

i used bilstien shocks and replaced the bolts for something better.

i'm not sure if this is normal, or if i'm just freaking out because i hate noises from my cars.

any help please.

no. it clucks anytime i hit a bump.

u-joints don't sound like this. i broke plenty of those in my toyota. i know when i've broken one of those.

I'm there with you. I took my Rusty's 2" lift out to a local off-road area today. http://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4542Since the overall mission was to increase the wife's confidence, I never mentioned the clunking I heard from the rear.

Mine was very seldom, only when the suspension was working a bit. I have never heard it in normal driving. I have done all that you have done, checking tightness of bolts, etc.

Since I only heard it while stressing the system, I"m not too worried. Do you hear it all the time?

P.S. Get that winch bumper done so you can start on the rear bumper/tire carrier. That's what I really want!

I have the Superlift kit on mine but experience the same issues up front. Hit a bump, hit a pot hole, go over a speed bump and a clunk up front.

Spent days trying to figure it out. Went over to a buddy's house and he looked at it and noticed the angle of the upper control arm in front and how it is flexing the ball joint. He started rocking my Jeep back and forth at the front fender and clunk, the upper control arm would hit the top of the long control arm (not sure what is officially called) that goes down from the ball joint. They clunk every time the wheel is dropped down away fromt he vehicle.

So now we are looking to design and build new upper control arms that come down and angle off to straighten out the ball joint and stop the to arms from hitting each other when the ball joint is flexed all the way over.

If this doesn't make any sense, I'll have to take a few pics during the day.

interesting. thanks.

this makes me want to get a solid axle even more. i hate noises from my vehicles. unless its the V8 of course.

When you installed the rear spacers, did you unbolt any of the control arms? If not, and if it didn't clunk before, it has to be the shocks. I know the bolt diameter is critical and you said you replaced those. I think the Bilstiens have bushings that match the stock bolts, that might be where something is amiss. A lot of guys have complained about the shocks knocking around even when they seem tight. If I'm not mistaken, the upper shock bolts torque to 75 ft/lbs and the lowers to 85. When I had the RR kit in, I had the proper bushing sleeves in (to match the bolt diameters) and torqued them to spec. No clunking.

As for the front, the only points of disassembly on a budget boost are the struts, top and bottom, upper ball joint and the stablizer bar. So unless you have a bad ball joint or tie-rod end, the clunking would have to be at one of those connections. I've heard the stablizer bar can be a culprit if the bolts at the lower a-arm aren't tight enough. Good luck, I feel your frustration.

My Rustys 2" lift rear was making noises I didn't like. I took it to the dealer that installed it and they said one of the shocks was leaking. I have a new one that I need to get put on to see it that stops the noise.

My Commander has a loud clunking noise comming from the front end whenever i hit a bump or pot hole and i dont even have a lift. Someone mentioned tie rod end links or something like that.

Sway bar and/or tie rod bushings.

the stock bolts do not work with the bilstiens. i had to replace them with different metric bolts. they are a good fit to the bushings. and everything is tight.

i didn't have to unbolt any of the control arms. i just unhooked the shocks and the sway bar ends. the spring came out very easily that way.

My bad i meant sway bar end links. Not sure how i came up with tie rod end links. Its been a long day!

i finally have no suspension noise coming from my commander!!!!

i finally figured it out. i had one loose bolt on the front sway bar. the one that connects the control arm to the link. it was loose and all i did was tighten it down again.

my rear shocks are not making anymore noise either. i found if you call summit with the inside dimension of the bushing on your shock they can match your bushing to the shock and bolt.

i just thought i would update.

So I intalled the teraflex 2" a few week ago. Up to the last couple days everything was going good. I started hearing this clunk coming from the rear driver's side. I have no clue what it could be. I haven't gone through to make sure that eveything is tight but I plan on doing that this weekend. Anybody have this similar problem with the rear?

Sounds like your shock bolts have come a little loose. If it was doing it at the beginning, I would say that you needed to add spacers to your shocks. But since it just started doing it, I'd say loose bolts. Very easy to do. No lifting involved. Will take you a whole 10 seconds to complete. Let us know how it turns out.

Checked the bolts on the rear shock. They weren't loose so now i guess i move on to replacing the shock. Anybody know where I can order some rear shocks?
