I know there are a thousand threads regarding the mixed information on what the commander can actually tow. Jeep states the max weight is one thing when in reality other members state the towing weight is actually alot less. I just purchased a 2006 Commander 4.7 Limited(non 4WD) with all the bells and whistles on it. However the weirdest thing with this Commander has happened, it has a tow package with the TOW/HAUL button installed on the dash however an actual hitch has not been installed on the rear. My question is that I am looking to buy a 2001 Bayliner Boat but depending on the actual tow capacity on this Commander will depend on what size i will be getting. The options are between a 24' and 26'. To compare the 26'(2655) boat with full gas and trailer will weight in around 7500lbs compared to the 24'(2455) boat which full weight will be around 6000-6500lbs. I read that with the correct Class IV hitch that this model should pull up to 7200lbs since i also have a tranny cooler and the 3:73 gear ratio. To assist, i am in Miami so it is all flat roads and the furthest i will travel each way is about 5-10 miles from the home to the ramp.

I need your professional help guys. Do you actually think i can pull the 26'? Does anyone here pull anything heavier? Also should i get a stronger aftermarket hitch or should i go to jeep and have the stock Class IV installed?

I would not pull anymore than 6000-6500 lbs. The 4.7L engine is rated to tow no more than 6500 so even that is a stretch. The Hemi is where you get into the 7200 category.

6,500 is max. with the 4.7, however most trailer dealers will tell you, if properly set up with the class IV hitch and equilizer, you can go 10% over. I have a 28.5 ft. trailer (30 odd feet in all), I tow weighing in at just over 5,500 lbs filled. No problem towing in flat areas (I'm also from Florida), but steep hills are problematic especially if you fall behind an 18 wheeler who can only creep up a mountain side. You will run hot. If you are towing a short distance I don't think you will have a problem because of the flat terrain. Just make sure your brakes in the Commander are good and you adjust your electric brakes (I assume you have them) on the trailer to slightly brake first.

I too had the towing system installed, at Jeep otherwise the aftermarket system hangs too low for off roading departure angle. Hope this helps. Ken

All flat roads should be no problem. Hills like BADOS says will be a big problem. My trailer is under 5500 lbs and long steep hills are something I shy away from.
Not likely to find those in Florida except maybe some bridges.
