I did much the same thing, except used 4'' round 50 watt halogen floods.
What I really like is when off-roading, I can see a patch of GROUND behind. Regular backup lights shine straight back, and show up absolutely nothing except maybe an approaching fence or picnic table. You need to see the terrain behind you're when backing up in the dark, especially if there are holes.
I thought about it, but then didn't bother with adding a separate switch. They'd make great campsite lights... until you opened either the hatch or glass. Mine are wired into a ''relay farm'' that supplies the entire roof rack's lights. The relays are buried in the driver's side back trim area.
The upper lights only come on while in reverse AND the headlights are on. I used a relay interlock... one relay's tapped into a taillight. The power for all the top lights are fed by a #6 wire coming all the way from the battery, with an 80 amp circuit breaker. With the relays powered by that fat wire, the original lighting has no extra current draw.
By the way, those puny tires and factory spoke wheels are GONE now.
