I know the 5100 series strut is not meant to fit the xk, but does it work well with the xk? Does it perform better than the ome strut? For the rear, should the 5100 shock be used or the 5125? Can someone share their experience with this?

5125's are longer for lifted rears


5100 struts have an adjustable spring perch and allow you to lift the front

The lowest setting for the 5100 struts is actually a .75" lift. If you want no lift then get the 4600 HD strut.

Bilstein vs OME is an interesting comparison. OME is slightly longer and designed for the OME lift, also some prefer one, some prefer the other. I can't imagine that either is better overall, though this is only from reading reviews of both, I don't have experience with either setup yet. I did purchase bilsteins, as I don't already have a lift and was planning to replace struts anyways.

5100's fit the Commander fine, just like the WK, not sure why bilstein is not marketing them for the XK as there are plenty of Commander owners running them.

Well I do have steel bumpers on order with a winch in the future, so should i just stay with the OME shocks and struts since they are HD? Unless the bilsteins will be just as fine.

AFAIK there is no HD or MD with OME shocks struts. The spring rate is the only thing that changes.

If you have OME shocks/struts already, then I would definitely keep those, and consider a strut plate for an extra 1/2" if the front is too low for you with the extra weight.

If you have not purchased shocks and struts then I would definitely consider the bilsteins.

As a huge generalization, based on what I have read in regards to this, bilsteins will allow a bit more control on road and OME will be a bit softer for off road. Outside of that it is up to the end user to decide based on preferences. I will say that OME will still be superior to stock for on road control, especially compared to worn stockers.

I believe OME's warranty is 2 year/25k miles

However, some have said that because Bilstein 5100's are not marketed as being a Commander specific strut that they may not cover them in this application. :SM127: I feel that I am not helping too much, because again its a personal preference, and I have not tried both. You may be better served to post this @ jeepforum as they have more site traffic and many guys that run either of these shocks/struts in similar combinations with similar rigs to yours.

There is a thread on this forum from a Blisten 5100 owner that had one strut blow out and was very frustrated that Blisten would NOT honor the warranty for the 5100.

Blisten of course justified it by the fact they do NOT market the 5100 for the XK, that any resellers listing it as for the XJ are NOT authorized dealers and do NOT do so with their sanction.

Blisten also claimed he was off roading which voids their warranty as well. They also cited the photo of the damage showed the snapped ring was broken off, which they claimed could only happen from the vehicle bottoming out on the strut. I imagine a poor lift kit would cause this, or, if the XK was raised by the adjustable perch of the 5100, they must be saying that is the reason the 5100 is not for the XK. I don't think anyone really knows, the XK and WK suspensions are the same, but the vehicles vary slightly. Perhaps the adjustable spring perch works on the WK but they found in testing that for what ever reason, weight/dynamics of the vehicle, it breaks to often and thus won't market it for the XK.

So... if your considering a spacer to add to the top of OME front springs and instead use a set of 5100's, your going to instantly get an additional .75" lift?... as opposed to adding a 1/4" or 1/2" spacer?

I read somewhere that just because its a 1/4 or 1/2 inch thick spacer, its not automatically going to translate to that exact amount of thickness in the lift.

I read how it was somehow multiplied, because of the front end geometry. I'm kinda confused on that point.

Your talking about two different things. The 1/4" strut spacer will supposedly add up to .5" lift (i haven't installed mine yet) These are installed between the upper strut mount and the body of the vehicle.

Whereas the bilstein 5100's @ their lowest setting will add ~.75". These lift by raising the lower spring perch (the place the bottom of spring rests on) which is on the strut body.

It's hard to say exactly how much lift you will end up with from either, but its safe to assume that those numbers are very close to what your actual lift height would be increased by in either case. Don't do both though, you'll mess up front end geometry with both of those and OME springs.

Thanks for the clarification, I think I knew what I meant to say but had it all backwards.

So...adding an additional 1/4 -1/2" spacer with OME front springs will get you about a half inch.

Vs. a set of 5100's will get an additional .75" lift, but you dont want to use both.

I keep changing my mind on how I want to tackle my moderate lift project. I have almost 98k on the odometer, so I may as well get some fresh shocks on there. I'm guessing they are the originals still.

I'm now leaning in the direction of OME HD coils upfront, along with Bilstein 5100 struts, set at their lowest setting (.75").
I'm hoping that combo should keep me around 2.5" to just under 3" of lift upfront. I don't want to create issues for myself. My XK has a 5.7 engine plus I'm adding on a Matrix 4xguard brush guard, so there will be a little more weight upfront.

Then in the rear, a set of OME HD coils with an additional 2" spacer (something like Daystar spacer) ....or another option would be 4" SL coils or JBA coil springs, along with a set of Bilstein 5125 rear shocks.

I think the 5125 rear shocks might be a better way to go then 5100's in the rear, since the 5100 series is more recommended for around a 1.5" rear lift and with my proposed combo should be about 3.5"-4" or so in the back.

So many ways to tackle this and not get too carried away with a full SL.

What is your current height in the front axle to fender?

That sounds like a great plan for your case IMHO. You may consider cutting down the 2" spacer in the rear a little bit unless you like the rake.

I'm not sure where I'm at right now. I haven't mounted my 4xguard Matrix, since I'm still waiting on a few parts from JBA to arrive, to determine current finial height with the extra weight of the guard.

I'm also not quite sure what you use for the distance measuring reference points, when taking the measurements. Is it the center of the hub to the bottom of the fender? Or do you measure it on the axle shaft itself?

If I go from the center of the wheel hubs up to the fender lip, I have about 18-1/4" on both sides. But my XK is parked facing forward at the moment, on a slight grade.

Measure it on a level surface, and you can eyeball the center of the wheel hub to the bottom of the fender flare. It's obviously not a terribly exact measurement, but gives us a ballpark idea.

I keep forgetting to measure mine on a level surface, my driveway and street in front of my house are both not level.

IIRC my stock height was ~19" with the 3.7L, should be around 20.5" ATM.
