Hey guys,

I took the Jeep out hunting yesterday and ran into a funny problem. The last few months of cold weather driving I had no issues. The heater made sweltering heat and the fan blew air without issue. I even cycled through the various settings, floor vents etc. Part of the way there driving down the highway, the fan was blowing away, we could hear it running, but little to no air came through the vents. Hitting the brakes would make the fan change speed but no air. When we got to the area, we had to off road it a bit. As it was bouncing around through the rough trails, the air suddenly came pumping through the vents. I have read about an issue with the blend door and /or the blend door actuator. Any thoughts?

I think that could be your problem Flex, there are a couple of parts associated with that, that commonly break and/or fail.

Here is a pretty good thread about it that has alot of details including part numbers.

Part # 68017816AB for fresh air/recirc air door part.

Part # 5143192AA actuator for heater doors.

There is also a plastic gear on the actuator/recirculation door that tends to break off or the teeth on the plastic gear actually strip.

Thanks,

It goes in tomorrow morning for a new key fob to be programmed and then I will try to pop out the blower motor and see what I can find.

Ok, so I pulled the fan out. It had a small amount of debris in it but works fine. The blend door is still attached and nothing inside the housing appears broken. I tried to operate the modulator. It revolves around but is not engaging the teeth of the blend door. The cog on the modulator appears intact and the teeth on the blend door are intact. Somehow it must have popped out of alignment so that the modulator can only partially engage. I looked through my digital manual and can't find instructions on how to properly align the two components. I will try to look here.

Ok, I removed the modulator and the teeth are snapped off. I just ordered a new gear as it is available separate from the housing. Part number 68072190aa

So after reassembling everything, I realized that the broken gear would only affect the heating systems ability to adjust where the air is being drawn from. It has no control of which outlets the air flows through. There appears to be another actuator just to the left of the glove box door as you face it. Does anybody know if it controls the flow path? I used to hear a buzzing sound coming from that vicinity once in awhile.

I don't know honestly Flex - but it seems logical that might have something to with this part number for the recirculation air door:

Part # 68017816AB for fresh air/recirc air door part.

No bud. That is the blend door housing. The blend door is not damaged and opens and closes smoothly by hand. The gear that is manipulated by the actuator has the teeth broken off, but that door determines where the air is drawn into the HVAC assembly from. The dash controls either open the doors using vacuum or electronically or perhaps both. I will pull out a spare switch and see.

Ok, so blend door gear has been replaced. I filled the back of it with epoxy so that it would be more rigid. Blend door works great now. Same issue with the air movement though. It starts off fine with everything moving and air flowing. An hour down the highway and no air through the vents. Shut the vehicle off and let it sit for awhile and it works again. So it is obviously something that stops working when it gets really hot.

Sounds like it might be something related to the vacuum pressure to me - where as the engine is heating up, you are losing vacuum pressure somewhere which is affecting the proper routing of the airflow from the blower motor.

I read that the system is totally electronic on the Commander with no vacuum.

You may be right Flex, I honestly don't know.

Just from knowing how my Commander's AC & Blower motor runs and functions - it seems like there is vacuum pressure involved - but I could be wrong.

Like I've said many times, I'm no mechanic.

I was reading through some of the trouble shooting in the digital manual and found out that the activators for the internal doors are on the driver's side. So I decided to pop the access panels off and have a look to see if there was any damage or broken gears. Everything was intact and operated smoothly so that is definitely not the issue. It occasionally make a buzzing sound from the front of the center console when you operate the heater controls. I am going to try and figure out why.

On a positive note, when I removed the access panel I discovered that a mopar remote start system was installed. I suspected it due to a second antenna on the windshield that was identical to the one in the mopar kit. The Jeep came with only one key and no remote for the starter. I purchase one this summer but could not activate it until today as I could not find the interrupt button anywhere. I saw the wire for the interrupt button tucked up under the dash but the button was missing. So I just jumped it with a screw driver and programmed my remote. I now have remote start.:smile2:

That's very cool.....I have remote start too and it's really nice to have on those cold mornings - as long as you remember to leave your heater set the night before.....LOL.

I live in FL but I spend a lot of time in VA and travel up and down the east coast a lot when I'm in the states, so, I get some good use out of it.

On a side note Flex - you don't have a build sheet for your Commander?

Here is a link where you can get one - then you will know for sure, exactly what options your Commander had installed from the factory.

Dodge - Contact Us

To get the factory build sheet, click on "Your Vehicle" click on "Equipment Listing" and then enter your VIN number in the box that says "VIN" and hit "Search". The factory build sheet will list all of the factory options & optional preferred equipment packages that your vehicle had installed from the factory when it was built.

For an owners manual, here is the link - and again, this is from the same website I listed above, I just navigated to the point where you select "year" and "model" of the vehicle you want the owner's manual for:

I came across something weird in the sheets. It says "additional 7.5 gallons of gas". Any idea what that means?

Yes I ask the same question when I got my build sheet, it is enought gas to get you home or the first gas station. Bean counters watch everything.
