This one has me stumped. Perhaps someone has seen it before.
2007 XK Limited with a Hemi.

Backed out of my 100 ft driveway this morning onto the street. Shifted into drive and accelerated slowly . When I got to about 30 mph (400 feet), The vehicle stopped very abruptly and came to a dead stop as if the brakes were applied sharply. Hard enough to cause me to lurch forward into the steering wheel but no wheel chirping or sound/feel of the ABS. Luckily there was no one behind me. I shifted into park and then into drive and pulled over to the side. The car moved freely. Here are the things I remember and tried.

1) Engine did not stall.
2) Dash lights remained normal.
3) Tire pressure was normal.
4) Carpet normal around brake pedal.
5) Left foot was away from brake pedal
6) No abnormal sounds.
7) Hand brake not engaged because the shoes were removed last year.
8) Key jingle produced no DTC codes.

I continued on my way and put on 50 city miles without incident.
I feel like this is a time-bomb. (are you allowed to say that on the internet?):worried:
This is scarey.

Anybody have any Idea what the problem might be ?

Nope haven't come across that one before its a first for me. You didn't accidentally bump it into reverse or park?
No, not an easy thing to do with shifter detents. The shift lever was in D and the display showed D when the car came to an abrupt halt.

My abrupt halt problem has not occurred again.

Does anybody know if the transmission uses a pawl/pin to lock in park or is it a clutch that closes to an immovable disc to keep the car from moving?
I never have a problem getting out of park even on a 30 degree slope so maybe it is not a pawl system.

There was a recall regarding the XK jumping out of park after a remote start. The fix was a firmware update in the form of a re-flash. I never got the recall notice so it was never done to my vehicle.

I wonder if my problem is related to this software glitch. I wonder if it could possibly jump into park just as it randomly jumps out?

Still puzzled.

Maybe a little late, or may not apply. But just in case, last month while I was towing my Commander behind my motor home ,I hit a speed bump, the commander jumped up and down. It seemed the rear U joint contacted the hand brake cable and either locked up the rear wheel, or locked up the drive shaft. I unhooked the Jeep , backed it up off the road and it rolled free. Secured the cable with a cable tie, and hasn't reocurred.

I've read about the cable contacting the drive shaft and making a lot of noise.

So I don't know if this is related but the other day I was being especially heavy in the foot as I went over a railroad crossing. I let my foot off the gas right as I went over but when I went to accelerate again, the engine cut power. I looked at the dummy lights and the ESP was flashing as me. So I kept my foot off the gas for a second or two, tried again, and this time it picked up a usual. Being that it was March when this was first posted, could you have hit a patch of ice or something to cause the stability program to kick in and shut you down?

The brake shoes in the parking brake were removed two years ago, so nothing related to parking brake is possible. Road was dry, no ice to be seen.

Foot on the accelerator, still accelerating lightly at 30 kph, then bam. A hard stop.

The problem has not occurred again after several thousand miles.

Possible causes that come to mind at this point and are ruled out:

Skid control malfunction: no codes and did not pull to either side.
ABS malfunction: no codes and no chatter or pulsing during stop.
ECU/TCU malfunction: 2 gears engaged simultaneously? No codes.

I am baffled.
