Hey guys... I just installed a universal CAI today with a reusable cone air filter. It cost me a a lot less than the K&N CAI. I ended up spending 90.00 for this upgrade. I had to customize the MAF sensor to work with the CAI.

I installed this CAI because I had an issue with the low end torque. When I had my exhaust installed 3" from the cat back cause a back pressure problem. I spoke with a couple of people who work on race cars and dyno cars for a living told me that my factory intake was robbing my engine of HP and causing it to be sluggish at hard acceleration. I was also seeing only 10mpg city and 12 hwy for fuel economy.

I did some research and found a universal and designed my own using the universal as the back bone.

I drove down to Newport RI today, about 100 mi from home. I was getting 16.3 average at 65 using cruise and 15.6 city. Huge improvement. Best 90 bucks spent.

I will post pictures when I get back home.

Romeo,

Try doing what I did.

Night and day difference as I giggled like a school girl when I punched it today on the highway. The moster awoken while it was roaring by other cars! Sounds like a story but a true one...

Wow, that's kinda hard to believe. I hope it's true though. I'm planning on letting my Commander breath easier with a CAI and a Cat Back as well. I've installed CAI (AEM Brute ) and Cat Backs (Borlas) on all my Wranglers but I really didn't notice any mpg gains. But then again the 37" tires don't help either :D

RedCommander,

I'm sure your right... It's the do dad that was in the resonator. It looks like a blue diode. MAF sensor that I'm use to looks like a thin piece of string. Not really up to speed with Jeep yet but as I tinker with the beast I wil lbe an expert.

Guys,

Here are some pics of my CAI and my Jeep.

Hopefully this works. I used photobucket.

If you take a look at the CAI, I bought a AEM CAI Kit for the Acura Integra for $49.99. I also bought a 60 degree 3' mandrel bent tube. You can see where the 60 degree tube meet the body. I have the clamps holding them together. I then built a heat shield made of 26 aug. steel sheet metal. Total cost about $80.00.

Beat paying 300.00 bucks for the K&N. Does the same thing just takes more creativity.:)

neat work. One thing that puzzles me is that the filter is "in line" - it has a black flex tube going into it as well as the chrome tube going out. If that cone filter is the same as the K&N, that would make the air coming in bypass the filter medium. Shouldn't the chrome tube from the intake terminate at the filter?

I agree, it looks like the in coming air would by pass the filter element and flow straight thru. That looks like an open air filter rather than an inline filter. Might want to double check your set up. It looks like the filter would only clean the air coming in from the engine bay and not the air coming in the intake.

Hey guys,

The tube is a snorkel for the cone filter. The filter has a fitting for it that filters the air as well. It is not a bpass since it is at the tip of the filter and the rest is open to the engine. The filter is rechargeable just like the K&N. The the reason for the snorkel is when I am at a standstill and the air in taken in by the snorkel which is behind the directional and headllight. In that area I am safe from rain ater or splashes and it is als before the engine heat and yes it does mix with the hot in the engine compartment while it is sucking in air. Which brings it to warm air.

I'm sure the K&N and Brute Force also has a concave tip so you can add a snorkel.

webjones,

Thanks for the pic.

Sorry to see that the K&N does not have an opening at the end of the cone. I can see why it's confusing when I have a hose coming out the other end  . Just to make sure everyone understands; the air coming from my snorkel is filtered cool or cold air.

Cico7,

I have absolutely seen an improvement in mileage. I drove to Ipswich Ma today and it's a 35 mph 20 mi. stop and go and was averaging at 15.6 mpg. I normally get 10 and on a good day get 11.
