Not sure I am calling them the right name, but I am referring to the cargo bags you see on the roofs. I have a few questions about them.

1. Are they okay for the paint on the roof?

2. Are they waterproof, meaning, will they keep my cargo dry in the rain?

3. What brand would you recommend? What should I look for in a bag?

Thanks.

I have a Thule bag.

It's huge, and is great for camping stuff. It's pretty watertight too, as last year's 4th of July was mostly wet. We drove 300 miles of forest service roads, but had dry gear for every night's camp. We put the "soft goods" i.e. sleeping bags, overnight duffles, and the like in it. "Hard" stuff like ice chests, stove, lanterns, etc. were in the back of the Jeep.

As for paint, it might well rub and damage it. Any cargo bag will. I have a roof rack, so it's a non-issue. The Thule does have several straps included, and if tied down properly, the movement should be minimal. I'd still use something like a felt moving blanket underneath it.
