Hey all. First time posting. Just got my Jeep Commander three weeks ago and am loving it.

My check engine light just recently came on. I did some research and found the error code P 3449: Cylinder 7 Deactivation/lntake Valve Control Circuit/Open. I've looked around jeepcomander.com and a couple other forums and I've came up with the solution that it's time to change the spark plugs. There is approximately 150000km on the engine. Checked the inspection report and they didn't change them before I purchased the vehicle. I don't have any record of when they were changed last, so I think it's a safe bet.

The recommendations I've found for spark plugs on the 2006 5.7L V8 HEMI are as follows:

-16x Champion copper cores P/N: RE14MCC4
-don't use platinum or iridium plugs because of the wasted spark system.

I haven't had time recently to pull out the existing plugs so this is why I'm posting today. I would just like some feedback from some experienced Comander owners as to if my information is correct before I go spending the cash for the parts. Also, if anyone has any other recommendations , it would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I do plan on changing them out myself. :)

I agree that the use of the Champion Copper plugs would be best. From reading the posts, many have had issues with platinum plugs. I addition, I would also check the differential, radiator and transmission fluids if that has not been changed. I would look on Ebay for some great deals on filters, oils and plugs.

? OK, MDS and Cylinder Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit/Open has nothing to do with ignition, why would changing spark plugs fix it?

Don't get me wrong, I don't know for a fact, maybe someone posted some sort of cause and effect and fresh spark plugs do fix the problem. I can't tell from you post, but if you didn't really find anything telling you what I just said, I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

If I had a code for Control Circuit Open, I would be checking the connectors and cleaning the connectors, looking for loose wires.

If you're overdue for a plug change, then by all means change the plugs, it can't hurt. But, unless I'm missing something that someone figured out, i.e. how two unrelated subsystems of the engine, somehow effect each other, I don't think its going to clear that code and fix the problem.

I completely agree with what you're saying. I did check to see if there were any fuses blown or if there were any loose connections in my initial inspection, but I couldnt really find anything wrong.

Funny thing, the check engine light went out before I changed out the plugs, and hasn't come back on since. This leads me to believe that they are unrelated.

I have heard that it is a common problem for the check engine light to come on intermittently in the 2006 Comanders. I may just need to clear the message next time.

The search is ongoing haha....

The PCM monitors all sorts of parameters on the engine, if it spots something wrong, it keeps track of it, if it bad enough, it will light the CEL. As the PCM monitors the engine if it sees the problem goes away and NOT come back after a certain time, it will turn out the CEL.

The problem may have been a one time fluke, and has NOT come back, that is why the CEL went out. If the CEL keeps coming back for the same code, then I'd look into trying to figure it out and fix it.

It's definitely not uncommon to throw a random code and have it go away. Write down the code, when it happened, how long it took before it went away, and what you did before, during, and after to it (changing plugs etc). Also write down the mileage and put it in your records just in case.

Golden Rule; Perform all scheduled maintenance on time, if you have no written history that it has been performed, do it..... If you offroad or tow regularly, change the fluids more often like your owners manual states.

- Low oil pressure
- Restricted oil passage
- Engine mechanical condition
- Faulty Multiple Displacement System (MDS) Solenoid
- Multiple Displacement System (MDS) Solenoid harness is open or shorted
- Multiple Displacement System (MDS) Solenoid circuit poor electrical connection

Tech notes;
Although in some cases changing the engine oil may fix the problem, usually the Multi Displacement System Solenoid may need to replaced."
