Alright Clay Bar users, what's your preference? I've used Mothers Clay Bar, and MeGuiars Clay Bar. The Mothers is actual clay, and MeGuiars is a synthetic glob of fake clay. Have you used either? Have you used both? Which is your favorite?

I prefer the Mothers brand. To me the real clay seems to have a better feel, and seems to do a better job of getting the particulates out of the paint. The MeGuiars brand has a couple of advantages, one being that the clay comes separated into 2 pieces, each wrapped in plastic, and the pieces come with a claybar holder similar to a travel soap holder, so that's cool, but I still think the Mothers brand works better.

What do you guys think?

I started using Clay this year, went with the Mothers and was very happy with the results on my XK and the wifes Jetta.

I will need to buy another kit as the clay was pretty close to toasted after doing her car and the Jeep, and then I dropped it on the ground. I had planned on sticking with the Mothers, even though I use Maguires for most appearance related products. I have also read that NAPA has a good clay kit for about the same price, not sure about the quality of the lube (detailing spray) with that set, I really like the results of the Mothers.

One brand for every type of shiny: Zaino.

I saw someone else on here use the stuff, and checked it out. Their clay bar is great...I couldn't believe how much stuff came off with that thing. Their polish is amazing...really. Wax is so last week!

I don't sell the stuff, but wish I did...so don't even mention that 4 letter word that begins with 'S'...No! Not THAT ONE... The other one!

Wax is great for protection, but the polish from Zaino is actually more protective and lasts longer. Wax breaks down way faster, whereas Zaino is much more UV protective. You should check out their website...very informative on how it works.

The stuff is cool because after you polish it (which bonds to the paint, not just coat it), you apply the spray on enhancer. The gloss enhancer is actually anti-static, so the vehicle repels the fine dust that all us owners of dark vehicles see within 10 min after washing.

I could rave about it all day, but you just have to try it to really see how great it works.

We polish the Commander and Prius in the Spring and Fall.

Everytime I wash the Commander I use the claybar (Mother's) to get any tar and junk off that I just can't otherwise. I also use the Turtle Wax Ice in certain areas to give it some extra shine.

I was, however, informed this weekend that the claybar is not a good choice for vehicles if you care about the longevity of them as it can damage the clear coat and/or paint, so I may be putting a nix on them.

I don't know if I buy that. Well, I guess they can damage the clear if you don't use it correctly, or if you use the same one with the grit in it over again. But used properly a clay bar will not harm the paint on a vehicle.

But I'd think that using a claybar at each wash is extreme. That means you have to wash, clay and wax whenever you wash your car as the claybar will remove the wax as well.

Well, there are people out there who only wash their car as often as they wax it!

We wash them every two weeks depending on what they get into, etc.

I have a problem with the lip on the inside of the wheel well getting tar on it, and for me its easier getting it off then letting it build up.

I used Mothers Clay Bar this weekend for the first time and the first time ever using a clay bar. It was easy to work with and really brought out more of the shine. I always wash every few days and keep it waxed with Ice (paste every few months with a buffer) as well as use Ice detailer after each wash. It shines like new or better and I get a lot of positive comments. I have to admit I am a fan of Clay now.

Nope, different things. I wash, claybar, polish and then and only then wax.

Had a bet with a guy at work last year. He was putting up his Ice Liquid Claybar car up against mine after using a real claybar. Real won, hands down. His was nowhere near as smooth as mine.

i use the ice liquid clay bar, i know its not the same but its so easy and i do it before every wax,

when i bought my commander, the paint on the front and rear bumpers were slightly differnt colors than the rest of the body, i thought it was just a bad paint job cuz it would'nt wash off, i decided to try clay bar... so i did, and the ice stuff restored the color back to factory.....ive been hooked every since
