Some posts have mentioned that ABS sensor problems can stop the cruise from working. If a sensor or wiring to the sensor was the problem, shouldn't there be an error light and trouble code for the ABS system?

I can turn on the cruise, but trying to set it shuts off the light.

That sounds to me, like you could have a short or ground somewhere and that will not necessarily generate a DTC.

My next question would be do you have a Scanner or Tuner to try & pull DTC's?

The cruise light went out, and stayed out. Would not come on again. Restarting had no effect. It would usually come on with just the key on, not running, not this time. My scanner just has a "clear all codes" selection. I used that, and the cruise would turn on again with just the key turned. Cruise light stayed briefly while running. So I suspected the reader was doing something. Then I tried the "key on 3 times" method. The readout showed "p0582". This is "Cruise control vacuum circuit open"
Pulled off the vacuum line to the actuator with the engine off, and there was a whoosh from a vac. reservoir downstream. Started it up, and it seems the suction is not that much. The line feeds off the throttle body, which has 2 electrical devices on it. One is the TPS.
Do they have anything to do with the amount of vacuum to the hose?

The cruise dropping problem started as a sometime thing, and got worse over the last year.

Never mind about the vacuum. I put on a vacuum gauge, and there is plenty, like 23 inches at idle.

Looked up how to troubleshoot the TPS online. The readings I got indicates the TPS is working, but I will have to research the readings for proper parameters. Just for grins, I fired it up with the TPS disconnected. Ran ok, but got a CEL with a generic code (p0123). Got other warning lights for the ESP as well.
