Drove through a wash today on my way home. It was a little flooded and muddy. Afterwards I felt a vibration and growling sound as I accelerated. I figured the driveshaft caught some debris throwing it off balance but after inspection underneath I found nothing of the sort. But I did discover this(see pic in post #3), could this be the cause? Also I'm worried that the transfer case may have water in it now. As a side question, would there be any adverse effects if I disconnected the front driveshaft temporarily? Anybody know what the seal is called? Anybody ever changed it?

That whole cv joint gets replaced, not just the seal/boot. It comes in a kit. I doubt that is causing your vibration unless it is extremely worn. Either way it needs fixing anyway.

You can not drive the jeep without that front shaft in it unfortunately
