Anyone mount a fire extinguisher in theri XK? I've always mounted one in my cars/trucks/jeeps, and trying to find a good location. thinking of mounting it to the inside of the tailgate, or on the in the rear, but in a place that wont intefere with the 3rd row, or flexibility of the package tray. I like the recessed area of the tailgate, but it is not even to make it flush/square. Any thoughts?

Re: Fire Extinguisher?

Can you mount it under the front passenger seat? I am not sure if you can mount it sideways and how big of an extinguisher you are talking about.

I have a 300watt power inverter under the passenger seat and there was plenty of room for that but it may be shorter than the extinguisher.

Mount it behind the cupholder for the 3rd row. That's where I stash mine when we pack for camping.

Couldn't find a good location for a mount, so mine is loose in a canvas tool bag in the rear (with the third row seat removed). Not really satisfactory, but better than nothing.

Re: Fire Extinguisher?

Found a great location, I mounted a medium sized FE to the recessed side of the tray that covers the jack. It fits perfectly, and does not effect the position choices. I usually keep it with the tray up, to hold stuff from rolling around, but can flip it for carpet side up and flat cargo area, and the FE fits perfectly. Much more comfortable now, this is a must have for me. Never had a car fire myself, but want to be ready. Is a smart $20.

There is enough room in there for a fire extinguisher AND the jack, etc.? What extinguisher did you get?
I got the typical Kidde multipurpose FE... About 13" long and 3" wide. It does stick up above the lip by about 1/2" but the recessed nature of teh bin underneath lets it go in no problem. I screwed the FE to the actual tray you remove, so I can flip it bin side up with FE exposed, or turn it over carpet side up and FE is hidden.

Extinguisher Mount

Sometimes a little bit is all ya need.

Every firefighter I've spoken to says the best tool in the event of a vehicle fire is a good set of track shoes.

Both of those statements being granted, I like having a fire extinguisher in my vehicle. In the Wrangler world they're handy for putting out grass fires accidentally touched off by catalytic converters. In my Commander world they may be handy for putting out an upholstery fire in the car parked next to mine in the mall parking lot after the smoker dropped his cigar in the seat.

That being said, I removed the panel in the back of the console (there are four clips that hold it in place, easily removed and replaced), drilled two small holes for the mount, used two machine screws, locking and flat washers, and attached the mount to the panel. There is little weight actually on the mount, I had the extinguisher on the floor when I determined the placing of the mounting holes. (Put the extinguisher in the mount, place vertically on the floor, slide against the back panel of the console, draw a pencil line along one side of the mount and across the top. Remove the extinguisher, take the mount off of the console, align the sides of the mount with the pencil line, mark and drill holes).

Obviously not for everyone - and it pretty much removes the center of the back seat from anyone with size 12 shoes - but in my case no one will be sitting there.

A larger one would give more fire fighting capability, but I'm not going to be fighting gasoline or underhood fires - I have good track shoes.

(The pics were taken by a P&S, sorry about the poor quality).

Good Idea, I carry two fire extinguishers and just keep them in the back next to the rear side windows. Your mount would be quicker and always available.
