I just crawled under my new commander for the first time to change the oil and found what was causing that wonderful smell that my Jeep dealer said was normal. Jeep uses what looks like an aluminum faced heat blanket between the engine compartment and lower fire wall. I followed it up the back of the engine with a flashlight and in several places it was burnt right through. In some spots the clearance between the engine and the fire wall is very tight, thus causing the excessive heat/melt. Im not worrying about it for now, but I could have done without the burning smell for the first 3,000 miles.
