I always had a problem in the Commander of not having a front roof grab handle for the front seats similar to the ones in the second row. And recently, I had three guys sitting in car (in the passenger seat) and they all had one comment: “how come you don’t have a grab handle in here?!!”
I know that there is a front grab handle between windshield and the door, but this is useless during the trip. It is only good to get in and out, and sometime for off-road trips.

Long story short, I bought 2 handles from the dealer, (for about $125) and I just finished installing them.

Here are my comments for the installation:

1) The main idea was to replace the roof front reading lights with the grand handle (with integrated light).

2) From behind, the handle light fits perfectly in the old light gap in the
headliner. Also the plug will fit perfectly.

3) Small modification had to be done to the handle. I had to cut some plastic from behind to make it flat. You need to cut the plastic ‘cones’ that are supposed to hold the screws. In the second row, there is already a place in the headliner to hold the screws.

4) For holding the handles, I used heavy duty two way tape PLUS two plastic rivets. Of course I drilled a small hole in the headliner for this (I made sure that there is nothing behind the holes since the side airbag is installed in that area. (see pics).. I tested them, they hold really good!

And here are the results…

That's a nice mod. I too have passengers complaining about no handle. Do you have any pics of the actual installation ? That would help a lot.

Thanks, Unfortunately there was no camera handy during the installation.. (not even a mobile phone!).. I tried to explain all the hard steps in the installation. Send me a msg if u need more details during your installation.
If will not take much time to install, I spent most of the time, just checking for the optimal way to hang it and to make sure that nothing is in the way from behind

That looks nice, but will it rip away if you are holding firmly to it during some really rough off roading?

Seems to me they are not strong enough? I considered the same mod but there's no metal to attach them because of the air bags.

What weight can they support??

As I said, these are not meant for holding while offroading.. these are for holding in normal on road trips.. and for that they hold really good (can not say how much weight!!).. but really good.. I have big arms, and handles are just holding fine..
