newbie with the commander,I just traded in my harley f150 and i need some help trying to figure why am getting this clunky sound from the front passenger side when ever i go over a speed bump or even driving up my driveway just doesnt make any sense to me.---. i almost forgot to mention ive had the commander since oct of 08 and ive had to take it in for serviceing the 4wd system I did mention the clunky sound to the dealer and they said thats normal????:icon_confused: please advice!!!

The noise tends to be the bushings in the front due to cheap material imo... I have this issue only when its cold outside. But seeings your in NV, I say find a smarter service writer.

I got mine fix under warranty.

I think there are a bunch of us that have had the "clunk". I had mine fixed under warranty, but it is back again after another 12,000 miles. They replaced the ball joints and the whole steering rack. I'm not sure what your clunk is from, but if you sat still in the jeep and rotated the steering wheel back and forth you could hear mine clunk.

thanks for the heads up , ill just have to take in to a different dealer and go form there i bought and extended warranty so theyll have check it out again and again till they fix or correct the problem!!!thanks guys!!

I had (still have the same problem)... took it in, I had the left sway bar bushing replaced. They then replaced the left strut the second time I went in. I still have the clunking. I took it in again, they agreed they could hear it and then they test drove another Commander, it clunked too, so they said... they all do it.

I am checking out another dealer soon...

I have this same clunk.. it almost sounds if something is loose.

the more i hear this sound i think its the strut mount plate!!any body have any issues with the strut mount plate???

I have a small clunk but I want to put my street tires back on and see if the sound goes away.

Im trying to get to know my commander but that clunky noise is driving me krazy.i just cant belive that all commanders have this problem??but thats what the dealer said, that they test drove a new 09 commander and it has the same noise???thats bad for the jeep bussiness and dont get me wrong i love the way it rides!!!!!

I have the same clunk coming from the rear of my commander as well..I plan on replacing the bushings with poly and hope it clears up the issue...

The problem with a clunking sound in 4X4 suspension is usually due to suspension bushing through bolt loosening slightly. Get underneath with your spanners and tighten up all the through bolt and nuts, that should fix it. They normally come loose because of the wheel articulation when taken offroad.

Agreed. The dealer found that my left lower control arm bolt was loose, causing the up/down clunking, so they tightened it up. My steering rack's also clunking, but that's becasue of the angle the inner tie rod's at due to the 2" lift, so not much can be done about that, except get the 4" Superlift.

Front noise problem: SOLVED!

First, I'd like to thank everyone in this forum for all the tips they gave regarding the front noise problem that happen when you hit a bump. I went through all the answers that people wrote and I figured out what I need to do.

This is how I solved mine in the last weekend:

I took it to a small garage and I lift the car up and did two things:

1) Change the front bushings with brackets.
2) Tighten the 4 front cradle screws.

and it worked! no more noise!!

- Why I didn't do it at the dealer (although car is still under warrenty)? because those REMOVED don't know what REMOVED they are doing!!

Too funny! My noises were similar, except that I have to have the front diff bushings replaced, they're doing it under warranty this week.

Any details on this? I am going to take it to my buddy's shop this weekend. What brackets did you use? By cradle screws, are you reffering to the upper bracket above the control arm?

I am suprised that they did this under warranty with your lift. I am pretty sure my dealer won't. on another post you mentioned the problem coming from the steering rack, but also said that it may be beacuase of the 2" Lift angles. Did you end up eliminating this?

I have just seen so many different things, in addition to above:
1) Readjusted and tightened belly pan
2) Tightened cradle bolts
3) Installed 2x TSB dampners
4.) Replace steering Rack
5.) Tighten left lower control arm

My left side noise (I believe its the rear) only happens when it is below 45 and is a louder, tapping noise. The right rear never goes away and makes more of a clunking/popping noise.
Any thoughts?

Hosnims, what new bushings & brackets did you use, OEM or aftermarket? If aftermarket, which brand and are they poly bushings? I'm interested in switching to poly since the factory bushings have such a short service life.
