I finally got around to looking at my build sheet for my 06 4.7 XK limited. Under Standard Equipment it lists a 20.5 gas thank. Ok this is what I thought was normal. Under options it lists "7.5 Additional Gallons of Gas." Does this mean the optional tank is 28 gallons or that they put in an additional 7.5 gallions of gas into the tank at the factory"? Thoughts.

Creek,

I have an 08 Sport with the 4.7L Flex Fuel V-8.

My build sheet says my tank is 21.1 gallons and I have the same thing as you under Optional Equipment - 7.5 additional gallons of Gas.

I can tell you I know for certain that my tank is the size the build sheet says it is (21.1 gallons) from having filled it up countless times.

I think the 7.5 gallons of extra gas was like a courtesy gift to the original purchaser - you bought the vehicle, so, here's a free 7.5 gallons of Gas type of deal, or, maybe it has something to do with roadside assistance?

If you call roadside assistance because you're stuck/ran out of gas, you get a free 7.5 gallons of gas?

I don't really know why it's listed on the build sheet though, doesn't really make a lot of sense.

Blue, I have never put more than 19 gal in my tank, even when on board computer says zero to empty, just caught my eye. I have original sticker from the window and I don't remember it saying anything about additional gas.

Since I've never heard of a 2nd gas tank or tanks bigger than 20 or so gallons on Commanders, I'm going to say that "7.5 Additional Gallons of Gas." on the build sheet must mean they filled the tank with 7.5 gallons of fuel at the factory.

The fuel level sensors and gauge are not calibrated, so they will be off slightly, and they bias the tolerances toward the gauge reading lower than actual fuel in the tank, so drivers don't run out of gas with the gauge indicating there is still some fuel left. So, you can count on there still being a good gallon of gas or more still in the tank when the needle is pegged on zero. Sometimes more, I've had vehicles that read zero on the gas gauge with more than an 1/8th of tank still left in it.

The filler hose isn't counted in the specs, just the gas tank capacity. So, if you ran your tank bone dry and then filled it all the way to the tippy top of the filler port (which you're not suppose to do), it is possible to put more fuel in the vehicle than the specified fuel capacity. The filler neck/hose can hold as much as 1/2 to a full gallon of fuel depending on the vehicle.

The 7.5 gal of gas is the amount put in when built. So the dealer can move the XK around. It is a dealer requested item.

That makes perfect sense.

Still seems kind of odd that they would list that on the build sheet though, you think they'd have a better system in place than that.
