On my 06 Commander I have noticed the hand brake cable is routed so it is laying across the rear differential and is starting to burn into the protective casing. The dealer told me that all the Commanders are like that, they tiewrapped it up to the rear sway bar. This is not right has anyone else noticed this. I ask if there was a service bulletin for this to maybe install a clamp and they said no.

YESSS!!!

I can tell you that mine was like that. Me and some of my frineds were riding around up in Columbus and we went over a moderately bumpy railroad track and all of a sudden the transmittion was making an aweful sound! well, we pulled into a nearby service station and me and my buddy crawled under the XK and after a little inspection found that the E-brake cable was laying on the rear axel. (Diff housing)

Took a little coaxing but we got it back in place. Next day I took it to my dealership and they said the exact same thing as you. It doesn't lay on the diff but it actually lays across the frame above it and does not have anything that holds it in place except for the tension from being up against the frame. What happened in my case ( i think) is that we had 8 people in the vehicle and the extra weight while going over the tracks caused it to fall down.

My wife was sitting in the 3rd row seats so I tell her it was her fault. :) Even more funny because she only weighs like 95 pounds!

But yes, they just zip tied it to the sway bar

Will that cable really cut into the diff? Wouldn't the diff be made of a heavier metal and just eventually break the cable?

I don't see how, if it's "cutting into the diff", with the diff being made of metal, I don't see how a plastic zip tie is going to correct this problem. ???

He is talking about the protective casing around the handbreak cable. Mine was worn out too, and in very short order too. Less than a mile to get to the filling station.

Why was the trans making noise? Even if the cable breaks I would asume the worst thing would be you would just loose the hand brake on that wheel. Mine is happening on the right rear which side was yours?

Ohhh, so its not the diff thats suffering, just potentially the handbrake cable (and eventually the handbreak). When mine goes, I'll take it to the dealer to fix under warranty.

I thought it was the transmission, but it was the brake cable rubbing on the transaxle as it spun. Mine actually was hanging down in the middle back by the rear axle.

The dealership says that this is due to the cable getting stuck!! I this this is a ridiculous excuse to have on a 45k vehicle. Anyone else having this problem or any suggestions.

Cable bind is very common after three or four winters in the salted road parts of the country.
Are you on salted roads during the winter?
If so, cable replacement due to corrosion is what you can expect, and it doesn't matter who the maker is or the mileage.
It occurs due to exposure, time, cable length, frequency of cable use.
If yours are binding, they will require replacement...soon.

Hand Brake Cable Snapped

I pulled the hand brake today and it snapped. I haven't taken it apart to look at the break, but it sounded like it was right at the handle or close to it. Has anyone changed their cable or had the console apart to see how difficult it would be to replace? I've done this myself on a previous car and it wasn't very difficult or expensive, just labor intensive (although those were much older than my 4 year-old XK).

Any advice would be great - I will probably also call a shop for an estimate.

The equalizer is located under the console/rear floor area.

I had my brake cable snap during our Sedona run a while back. Dealer repaired it under warranty.

I should also note that if it is one of the rear cable sections that you will need to do this same procedure to access the end of that cable, whatever side it is. And from there it is more complicated still so this will be something you will need to do either way. Seems to be a pretty time involving job.

Thanks Adamag, that is great info. This job looks more involved than I expected - I think I'll start with getting an estimate on this before starting to tear it apart myself. Unfortunately I'm out of warranty coverage so it may have to wait until the fundage is available, considering that I can get by without a hand brake for a while...

Glad I could help. If only the brake cable was as easy on the XK as it was on the YJ's and TJ's. You could swap out both the front and rear cables on those in about an hour or two with only a couple hand tools. Good luck and please let us know how much your get quoted to do the job. I am interested to know what something like this costs.

Same here, they had it for the day to do the work.
