Well as many of you know I have the 3.7 and have been interested in any performance upgrade possible. I have always thought having performance exhaust you should have a V8 otherwise its kindof stupid to do. However, I have changed my tune since I have gotten rid of my Limited Explorer for my commander that has average power. So this is were I ask your opinions if you think the whole idea of a V6 with aftermarket exhaust is worth it or not. That goes for performance headers too. Will this combo give me what I want in HP? I am concerned about the sound too, I dont want it loud...its a v6. I dont have experience with after market exhaust/headers so anyone with experience will give me an idea.

Headers are a PITA in my opinion. My experience has been that they warp and leak. I have had to replace gaskets often in the old trucks I have put headers on. Personally, I would not bother with headers on a newer car. You may be able to come up with actual horsepower gains somewhere on a full exhaust system. I would guess that they would be small gains at best. What do manufacturers suggest the gains are? I would look into actual tests to compare what horsepower gains could be and what they actually are.

Have to go along with Command Presence... PITA. Back in the 60's and early 70's I used headers in several of my vehicles. More space in the engine bay to dissipate the heat - all those down tubes are heat emitting. No catalytic converters, could actually get the gasses out faster and with rejetting the carbs could realize some performance gains to make it worthwhile and with the larger engine bays and fewer "parts" stuffed in there, it wasn't really a big deal to throw a new gasket on there (good excuse to sip some suds out back under a tree ;) )

Now, with the tight engine bays, tougher to get the heat out; more electronics that would suffer from the heat, more tubing that would have shorter life spans. Can't rejet the carb, would have to invest in a chip setup and you're still saddled with the catalytic converter bottleneck. You can get the exhaust there faster, but, it still has to get through it. I suspect there is talk somewhere about changing the exhaust temperature and pulse rates on how the catalytic converter would operate, I vaguely remember seeing something about it on a Mustang thread many years ago (used to have the 1st 5 liter Mustang in DC - 1978 T Top Custom, watched 'em unload it from the truck :D ). Couple that with the restricted space (front drive components) to put the collectors... Can be done, I'm sure they are made - most of the race crowd use them, but, they strip down their rigs so much most aren't even close to street legal. Add to that a "don't want it loud" requirement...the only way you get "not loud" is to "muffle" the exhaust - counter productive to headers.

Bottom line...IMHO, I don't think the cost / aggravation factors can be offset by what you might gain by going the header route. I would imagine a good CAT Back system will get you almost as much, meet your noise requirements and prove to be much less trouble prone down the road

My 2 Cents.

It depends on what you mean by "worth it". Is another 5-10 HP worth it to you? To me, no, not for what it would cost you.

I do not believe you would see a noticeable increase in power, in fact you would most likely see a decrease as you will lose bottom end power (torque) as the tradeoff for HP. Now, if you add a cam, some headwork, and an intake to go along with it, then maybe it would be worth considering.

Headers are great in some engines and others not. The Hemi Engine in our commanders like Headers and they increase HP more the 5-10 HP. On a 3.7LT, I couldnt say Ive never did headers on a V6. Ive put headers on a 360 engine and notice a small increase. I installed headers on 4.7LT engine and again low numbers, but on my 04 Hemi Ram my HP and TQ numbers went up. If I can remember HP was 18 more but tq went up to 25 more and really is a benefit but again a engine tune would benefit our engines more. Also there is header companies out there that dont build them correctly and are a piece of junk but you get what you pay for. Im currently looking for a good Header setup for my 68 Charger with the 440 in it and not sure who to go with.

Yea...10hp is not worth it. I want a solid mod to give me solid HP. I am willing to pay for it. They have a catback system for the 3.7 but it is only for the 2wd model. Anyone know why it wont work with the awd or if you could make it work without killing the performance?

a 68 440? Dude, HEMI, I want your car! I'll trade you my Commander for it!
Gas mileage on a 2nd commander would kill my wallet. So sorry but no trade. I figure my 68 might get like 8 mpg, but only going to drive this baby once a week.

Check with jbaheaders.com if your still interested. They make a set that will fit the 3.7L right at $500.00.
